New Hampshire LPC and MFT Renewal Information

In New Hampshire, Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), Mental Health Counselors (MHCs), and Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must renew their licenses on a biennial cycle, completing 40 hours of approved continuing education (CE) within each renewal period. At least 30 of these hours must be completed through Category A activities, which include live, in-person seminars, workshops, or interactive webinars. The remaining 10 hours may be earned through Category B, which allows for self-paced or less interactive learning formats. All licensees are required to complete 6 CE hours in ethics and 3 CE hours in suicide prevention, both of which must be fulfilled through Category A. Additionally, those who are board-approved supervisors must complete 6 CE hours in clinical supervision, also from Category A sources.

CE Requirements to Be Approved as a Clinical Supervisor(Counselors)

For license renewal, Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselors (LCMHCs) must complete 40 CE hours every two years, including at least 6 hours in ethics. These requirements ensure that supervisors remain current with best practices and ethical standards. The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers supervision-focused CE courses, including a 49-hour Clinical Supervision Certificate Program, to help New Hampshire clinicians exceed these standards and stay professionally up to date.

CE Requirements to Serve a Clinical Supervisor(MFTs)

Before beginning any supervisory relationship, you must complete 12 CE hours in clinical supervision from a Category A activity pursuant to N.H. Admin. Code Mhp 302.03 and Mhp 402.02.

Alternatively, this requirement can be met by completing a graduate-level course in clinical supervision OR by holding a clinical supervision certificate approved by one of the following:

  • AAMFT
  • AMHCA
  • NASW
  • ACPE

📌 Note: These 12 hours must be completed before the supervision agreement is submitted to and approved by the Board.

To maintain your LMFT license — and remain eligible to supervise — you must complete the following every two years, pursuant to Mhp 402.01:
40 CE hours total, including:

  • At least 30 hours from Category A
  • Up to 10 hours from Category B
  • At least 6 Category A hours in ethics
  • At least 3 Category A hours in suicide prevention (Mhp 402.01(d) and RSA 330-A:10, XI)

Additional Requirement for Board-Approved Supervisors
Under Mhp 402.01(a):
Board-approved supervisors must complete at least 6 Category A CE hours in clinical supervision during each renewal cycle.

These content-specific CE requirements may overlap when a course qualifies under multiple applicable categories.

Under Mhp 402.04.2(a), up to 30 of the required 40 CE hours may be completed through qualifying home-study formats.
