When a supervisee’s struggles extend beyond expected professional development, supervisors must be prepared to determine whether additional feedback is enough—or whether a more formal response is needed. Addressing these concerns with clarity, fairness, and appropriate structure is essential for protecting the supervisory relationship, supporting supervisee development, and maintaining the quality of client care.

This course provides clinical supervisors with a practical framework for recognizing performance concerns, initiating difficult conversations, and deciding when to develop a structured remediation or professional development plan. This live webinar offers relationally responsive strategies that can help supervisors remain supportive while establishing clear expectations and meaningful accountability.

Amie Bryant, LCSW, CAS, ACS, brings extensive clinical, supervisory, training, and leadership experience to this course. In addition to more than 10 years in private practice, she served as a counselor, Graduate Clinical Training Program Coordinator, and Counseling Center Director at Fort Lewis College and has taught as adjunct faculty for the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work Four Corners Program. Her experience supervising developing clinicians and leading a graduate clinical training program informs her practical approach to evaluating competence, providing feedback, addressing supervisory challenges, and supporting professional growth.

Using a relational approach grounded in self-awareness, skill development, and constructive accountability, Bryant will guide participants through the progression from identifying an initial concern to developing, implementing, and monitoring an appropriate action plan. Case-based examples and applied strategies will help participants consider how to preserve the supervisory alliance while communicating directly about performance concerns and problematic behaviors.

The course addresses common supervisory challenges involving power dynamics, countertransference, limited self-awareness, difficulty receiving or eliciting feedback, personality-related concerns, conflict, and ruptures in supervisory or client relationships. Participants will examine how to distinguish expected developmental struggles from concerns that may require formal intervention, assess supervisee competence, and approach difficult performance conversations clearly and constructively. The training also covers written and verbal evaluative feedback, due process, individualized remediation and professional development plans, measurable goals, progress evaluation, follow-up intervals, and relevant ethical and legal considerations.

Amie Bryant, LCSW, CAS, ACS

Amie Bryant is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Certified Addictions Specialist, EMDRIA Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant, and Approved Clinical Supervisor, specializing in work with adults and older adolescents. She has been in private practice for over 10 years and also spent 10 years working at the Fort Lewis College Counseling Center as a counselor, Training Coordinator for the Graduate Clinical Training Program, and ultimately as Director of the Center. Her previous experience includes work in schools, integrated healthcare, wilderness therapy, juvenile detention, emergency services, adult outpatient mental health, substance use treatment and prevention, and as Adjunct Faculty for the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work Four Corners Program.

She is passionate about working with people to improve wellness by supporting them in developing a strong and healthy sense of self. Using a relational approach to cognitive behavioral therapies, she believes that through the therapeutic relationship, acquiring skills and knowledge, and increasing self-awareness and understanding, we can learn to respond to our difficulties and discomfort rather than react to them.
