Description

For over 200 years, people with intellectual disability (ID) have faced systemic barriers and discrimination in the U.S., making equitable mental health care essential to addressing these disparities. However, the rise of telehealth during and after the COVID-19 pandemic has further limited their access to supportive therapy, as many clinicians feel unprepared to adjust their practices for this population in a virtual setting.

This course will guide you through the critical process of making telehealth more accessible and inclusive for individuals with ID.

Participants will gain a thorough understanding of intellectual disability, including:

  • its diagnostic criteria
  • the history of treatment and mistreatment of people with ID in the United States, and
  • the ways past injustices still shape the experiences of this population today

You will explore how telehealth can be a powerful tool for reaching clients with ID, offering them tailored support that meets their needs.

Through expert guidance and instructions, you will discover practical, evidence-based strategies for adjusting your assessments and counseling methods to align with the communication styles, cognitive abilities, and adaptive behaviors of individuals with ID. You will learn how to open your virtual doors and provide more equitable, effective care, ensuring that individuals with intellectual disability are no longer left behind in our evolving healthcare landscape. By the end of this training, you will have gained the skills to confidently work with this often-overlooked population and expand your practices to better serve people with ID.

Register today and take a vital step towards providing inclusive, high-quality care to those who need it most!

This is a non-interactive, self-study course.

Instruction consists of 1.5 hours of video instruction and a post-test.
