Social work is built upon a foundation of social and racial justice yet, many social workers are uncomfortable with this lens and underestimate its necessity in providing effective treatment. The NASW Code of Ethics clearly outlines the importance of uplifting those who are marginalized and oppressed as well as social workers engaging in advocacy efforts to root out oppression and systemic racism. While social workers come from many walks of life and are not monolithic in beliefs and practices, the uniqueness of our professional identity calls us to a higher standard of self and social examination. The social work profession (and other helping professions) have been called to explore our role in both furthering and dismantling systems of harm in better service to our clients and society. Through this workshop, we will explore the history and role of oppression and racism in social work, discuss racial trauma, learn how our individual biases are formed and reinforced through unconscious bias, seek ways to challenge and rewire our beliefs so that we can move beyond hate and towards love for all clients, and finally embrace actionable steps we can take to embody the fullness of our roles.
From the time of registration, you have six months to access the coursework.
Upon completion of this training, professionals will be able to do the following:
- Explain how internalized beliefs and biases shape treatment agendas, assessment, practice, and advocacy.
- Describe techniques to rewire unconscious biases in their minds.
- Explain racial trauma and the social and clinical implications of racial trauma in treatment.
