Child education literature tells us that systemic racism produces inequitable opportunities for the educational success of black and indigenous students of color. For example, today, due to systematically embedded policies and practices, black and indigenous students of color are more educationally segregated in under-resourced schools than they were two decades ago. As a result, and as has historically been the case, the opportunities for achieving educational success are compromised along racial lines. In addition, the role of implicit bias in interpersonal interactions influences the setting of educational expectations and how students and families are engaged, as well as many other educational decisions. From structural, intrapersonal and interpersonal perspectives, this training will provide an overview of the connections between race-related bias and how educational services are provided, as well as some initial steps needed for influencing more equitable outcomes.
This course was recorded from a live webinar presented by Dr. Sonja Sutherland on August 13, 2021
Upon completion of this training professionals should be able to do the following:
Explain implicit bias and how it is developed.
Describe how implicit bias influences educational decision-making.
List initial steps needed for influencing more equitable outcomes for black and indigenous students of color.
From the time of registration, you have six months to access the coursework.
