It is often said that depression and anxiety are paired or in lock step. While it is true that these conditions can frequently co-occur and have some overlapping symptoms, we as mental health clinicians would do well to remember that the same could be said of any two phenomena. But it is incumbent upon clinicians to recognize the difference and treat them appropriately!

DSM-5 is a book about behavior. While similarities can exist in behavioral symptom sets, in the same way, failure to recognize, diagnose, and treat the specific conditions that produce them usually leads to treatment failure. This course overviews the specific cognitive models of depression, anxiety, panic disorder, anger, and addiction, and presents an integrated cognitive approach to trauma and PTSD.

"Intermediate Level CBT: Understanding Depression, Anxiety, and Other Specific Cognitive Models" is one of three courses that comprise the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Training Certificate (CBTTC). Enroll in the full program and earn 15 total CEs and the CBTTC.

Jeff Riggenbach, PhD, trained at The Beck Institute for Cognitive Therapy and Research in Philadelphia and over the course of 20 years has developed and directed cognitive-behaviorally based treatment programs for Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Addictive Behavior Disorders, and Personality Disorders at two different psychiatric hospitals and clinics treating patients at multiple levels of care. He has trained clinicians in all 50 United States and 9 countries around the world on the very content covered in this course.

Through didactic teaching, case studies, and humor - and drawing from the latest CBT-Based literature, Jeff is known for tapping into lessons learned from research in a way that takes them from the “top shelf” and puts them on the“bottom shelf” so they can be practically used by clinicians“in the trenches,” working in a variety of settings.

In this course, you will understand the nuances of various cognitive models, specifically describing a plethora interventions including: behavioral activation for clients with depression, behavioral experiments for internalization of more accurate risk appraisal for clients with anxiety, interoceptive strategies for clients with panic disorder, impulse control interventions for clients with anger management problems, and strategies for managing urges and preventing relapse for clients with addictive behavior disorders. In addition, he will present an integrated cognitive approach for treating trauma based upon the newly released updated APA practice guidelines for frontline treatments for PTSD.
