As AI-assisted documentation tools rapidly enter mental health settings, many clinicians face uncertainty around how to ethically and legally implement these technologies. This course addresses that critical gap by focusing on how to use AI-generated clinical notes in alignment with the APA, NBCC, NASW, and AAMFT Ethics principles, their recommendations, as well as HIPAA regulations. It centers the potential risks around client consent, data privacy, and documentation integrity, especially as AI platforms vary widely in how they store, use, and secure client data.
This training is designed for licensed mental health professionals, clinical supervisors, and advanced-level graduate trainees who are using, or considering using, AI documentation tools in private practice, training clinics, or agency settings. Participants should have foundational knowledge of ethical and legal standards in clinical practice and be seeking clarity on how those standards apply to the integration and use of AI note-taking platforms.
Based on comparative analysis and testing of six leading AI note-taking tools, this course covers how each of the platforms handled informed consent, data retention, and HIPAA compliance. Participants will engage with details concerning the documentation output, security features, and consent limitations, so they can more critically evaluate whether and how to ethically adopt these tools in their own clinical settings.
This course is ideal for behavioral health providers who wish to embrace AI-powered clinical documentation without compromising their ethical responsibilities or client trust. As the mental health field evolves, therapists must be able to integrate new tools with transparency, integrity, and a clear understanding of the legal frameworks that protect client confidentiality and professional accountability.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify key legal and ethical risks when using AI clinical documentation tools
- Demonstrate how to have meaningful informed-consent conversations about AI note-taking tools with clients
- Evaluate AI note-taking vendor claims regarding HIPAA compliance and data use
