Clinical supervision often focuses heavily on technical skills and theoretical knowledge, yet the most powerful tool we bring to our work is ourselves. Supervision offers a unique opportunity to cultivate the self as a professional, emphasizing the integration of personal and professional identity in clinical practice. By focusing on the use of self, this course explores how supervisors can intentionally bring their unique personality, insights, and lived experiences into the supervisory relationship while navigating the complexities of power dynamics, authority, and cultural identity. This intentionality fosters a dynamic space where supervisors and supervisees alike can deepen their self-awareness, refine their skills, and remain grounded in their work. By focusing on the person behind the profession, supervision becomes more than a tool for skill-building—it becomes a reflective and relational space that nurtures ethical practice, professional growth, and ultimately, the most effective care for clients.
This course is for mental health professionals at any stage of their supervisory journey, from those newly stepping into the role to seasoned supervisors seeking a deeper relational approach. It is especially suited for those who value reflective, process-oriented supervision and are ready to explore how their unique personality, experiences, and self-awareness shape the supervisory relationship.
This training builds on the premise that we, as supervisors, are the instruments of our trade. By combining relational supervision practices, cultural humility, and the use of self-awareness, it moves beyond traditional supervision frameworks. The course offers insights into navigating power dynamics, unconscious processes, and intersectional identities, helping supervisors co-create a meaningful and ethical supervisory relationship that prioritizes both personal and professional growth.
Participants can expect to deepen their understanding of how to use themselves as intentional tools in supervision, creating a reflective and collaborative space that prioritizes mutuality, safety, and growth. They will learn strategies to address power dynamics and relational ruptures while fostering an environment where both supervisor and supervisee can explore their professional identities authentically. By staying grounded in their own self-awareness and clarity, participants will enhance their ability to guide supervisees in offering the highest quality of care to clients.
By centering the person behind the profession, this course equips supervisors to remain attuned, ethical, and effective in their supervisory practice. These changes are essential because they not only elevate the quality of supervision but also ensure that supervisees—and, in turn, clients—benefit from the clarity, integrity, and intentionality of a supervisor who is both grounded and relationally present.
Learning objectives:
- Define "use of self" in clinical supervision and explain how self-awareness, self-disclosure, and emotional regulation enhance supervisory effectiveness.
- Discover “use of self” in its role in fostering relational presence, navigating power dynamics, and promoting professional growth.
- Develop greater awareness of how personal and professional identities, values, and lived experiences shape supervisory relationships and influence power dynamics within supervision.
