Telehealth is no longer a mere substitute for in-person sessions — it's a dynamic tool that can enhance how we care for individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
But to harness its full power, you need a specialized approach. The course offers an exploration of the unique considerations and challenges that come with working with patients with neurodevelopmental disorders via telehealth.
Led by Dr. Felissa Goldstein, a renowned expert in neurodevelopmental disabilities and the Director of Telehealth Services at the Norton Children's Medical Group Division of Behavioral and Mental Health, participants will learn how to overcome communication barriers, manage sensory sensitivities, and address behavioral issues that often arise in this patient population through a screen. They will learn actionable tips and tricks that can be immediately applied in their telehealth sessions.
Through a combination of expert instruction, engaging discussions and practical demonstrations, participants will discover how to engage patients using alternative communication methods and creative strategies and learn techniques for building rapport and establishing trust with patients through a screen. They will learn how to harness the power of visual aids, assistive technology, and nonverbal communication to create a truly personalized experience for your clients.
The course emphasizes the importance of preparation, guiding therapists in setting up a conducive environment, ensuring devices are ready, and effectively involving family members. Participants will learn to use virtual diagnostic tools and assessments for accurate diagnoses. They will also explore the importance of continuity and consistency in care, teaching them how to maintain these critical elements through telehealth to support ongoing therapeutic progress.
By the end of this course, participants will be confident telehealth practitioners who are better equipped with the skills to provide exceptional telemental health care to individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities. They'll be able to create meaningful therapeutic relationships, facilitate communication, and empower their clients to thrive via telemental health.
