How a Licensed Psychologist in Minnesota Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor
If you’re a Minnesota-licensed psychologist researching how to serve as a supervisor in Minnesota, this guide distills the Minnesota clinical supervisor requirements, supervision structure, and renewal/CE obligations—plus pitfalls that can derail hours. After the rules, you’ll find ways TCI can help you meet Minnesota LP supervision CE efficiently.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements (Minnesota)
Minnesota defines who may supervise post-degree, supervised psychological employment in statute. Under Minn. Stat. § 148.925, subd. 3, an applicant’s supervision must be provided by one of the following:
(1) a psychologist licensed in Minnesota with a doctoral degree and competence both in supervision in the practice of psychology and in the activities being supervised;
(2) a person with a doctoral degree with a major in psychology employed by a regionally accredited educational institution or government institution/agency/research facility… with competence in supervision and in the activities being supervised, provided the supervision and activities occur within that institution;
(3) a psychologist licensed or certified in another jurisdiction with competence in supervision and the activities being supervised;
(4) a psychologist licensed in Minnesota before August 1, 1991, with competence in supervision and the activities being supervised; or
(5) in the case of a designated supervisor, a master’s or doctorally prepared mental health professional.
Minimum Supervision Structure
Minnesota also specifies the cadence and amount of supervisory consultation:
“Supervision of an applicant for licensure as a licensed psychologist must total 100 hours and must include two hours per week of regularly scheduled in-person consultations. For full-time experience, one hour must be with the primary supervisor on an individual basis; the remaining hour may be with a designated supervisor.” — Minn. Stat. § 148.925, subd. 5.
“Supervision may include telesupervision between primary or designated supervisors and the supervisee.” — Minn. Stat. § 148.925, subd. 1.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements (Minnesota Psychologists)
Is there supervision-specific CE required?
Minnesota does not require supervision-specific CE hours to maintain supervisor status for psychologists beyond the general 40 hours per biennium. The governing rule (Minn. R. 7200.3850) sets a general 40-hour requirement and record-retention duty; it does not create a separate or additional supervision CE category.
The Board’s website echoes the 40-hour requirement for each renewal period.

⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid
Using an ineligible supervisor. Ensure your primary or designated supervisor clearly fits one of the categories in § 148.925, subd. 3 (e.g., doctoral-level MN-licensed psychologist; qualifying academic/government psychologist; out-of-state psychologist; pre-1991 MN psychologist; or, for designated supervision, a master’s/doctoral mental health professional).
Not meeting the weekly structure. Minnesota expects two hours per week of supervision (one hour individual with the primary supervisor for full-time), totaling 100 hours; exceptions for brief gaps (e.g., illness) require board-recognized circumstances.
Practicing without proper authorization as a supervisee. Minnesota does not have a “registered supervisee” status for psychologists. Instead, supervisees must be authorized under statute (e.g., as an applicant or under exemptions). Board guidance clarifies that individuals who have earned their doctoral degree may begin postdoctoral supervised employment under the exemption in § 148.9075, subd. 8, but practicing without applicant status or an applicable exemption risks unauthorized practice.
Poor CE documentation. You must keep CE records for eight years and submit an affidavit of CE at renewal; missing or inadequate documentation can jeopardize renewal.
