How a Licensed Psychologist in Mississippi Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

How a Licensed Psychologist in Mississippi Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

Who can supervise postdoctoral psychology candidates in Mississippi? Unlike some states, Mississippi does not require a special “supervisor” license, credential, or training course for psychologists to supervise postdoctoral candidates. In other words, there are no additional Mississippi supervision training requirements for LPs (licensed psychologists) beyond holding an active license in good standing. However, the Mississippi Board of Psychology does set specific eligibility criteria that a psychologist must meet for the supervised experience to count toward licensure.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements in Mississippi

📌 No Formal “Supervisor License” Required: Mississippi psychologists do not need to obtain a separate supervisor certification, register with the Board as a supervisor, or complete any mandated supervision training course in order to serve as a clinical supervisor for a postdoc. Any Mississippi-licensed psychologist who meets the criteria below can supervise a postdoctoral candidate.

According to Rule 6.4 of the Mississippi Board of Psychology Rules and Regulations, post-doctoral supervision will be accepted for licensure only if the supervisor meets the following criteria:

  • 1️⃣ Employment or Contractual Relationship
The supervisor must be employed for no less than twelve (12) hours per week at the facility where the post-doctoral experience is obtained; or, if this is not possible due to practical considerations, the applicant must provide evidence of the supervisor’s contractual relationship with the facility. In either event, the supervisor must be available for supervision and consultation at any time during the supervisee’s work week.

  • 2️⃣ Licensure
Supervisors must be licensed for practice of psychology in the jurisdiction where the supervision is provided.

  • 3️⃣ Professional Qualifications
The professional qualifications of each direct supervisor must be appropriate to the services rendered.

  • 4️⃣ No Dual Relationship
The supervisor, at the time of supervision, must not be in a dual relationship with the supervisee.

  • 5️⃣ Knowledge of Clients
The supervisor must have sufficient knowledge of all clients for whom supervision is provided, including face-to-face contact with the client when necessary, to effectively develop and monitor service delivery procedures and the supervisee’s treatment plan.

🔁 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for Mississippi LP Supervisors

There are no extra or supervisor-specific CE hours required beyond the standard CE requirements for all licensed psychologists. Mississippi’s Board of Psychology does not impose any special continuing education mandate just for being a supervisor. As a supervisor, you simply need to maintain your license by fulfilling the general psychologist CE obligations.

General CE needed to renew your psychology license:

  • 20 Hours Biennially: Psychologists must complete 20 clock hours of approved continuing education during each two-year (biennial) renewal period. (Mississippi’s licensure renewal operates on a two-year cycle.)

  • Ethics & Legal Topics: At least 2 of those 20 hours must be in professional ethics or legal issues related to the practice of psychology.

  • Renewal Cycle: The CE reporting period runs on a biennial schedule tied to the licensure renewal date. In Mississippi, license renewal occurs in every odd-numbered year, and you must have completed your CE by June 30 of the odd-numbered year to renew. Essentially, the two-year CE cycle ends June 30 in years like 2023, 2025, etc., aligning with the state’s renewal timeline.

  • New Licensee Exemption: If you are newly licensed, Mississippi gives you a break on CE. Newly licensed psychologists are exempt from CE requirements for the remainder of the fiscal year in which their license was granted. Furthermore, if a psychologist’s first renewal year is an odd year (meaning their license was issued in an even year), they only need to complete half of the usual hours (10 hours) for that initial partial period. For example, if you got licensed in 2024 (an even year), you wouldn’t need any CE in the rest of 2024; and for the June 30, 2025 reporting deadline, you would be required to report just 10 hours instead of 20.

Bottom line: Mississippi does not require any additional “supervision CE” on top of the above. As long as you meet the standard psychologist CE requirements (20 hours biennially with 2 hours ethics/legal), you are in compliance – there is no separate supervisor renewal or training to maintain your status as a supervisor.

Official sources: Mississippi Board of Psychology CE rules in the Mississippi Administrative Code, 30 Miss. Code R. 3201-12.1, 12.2, and 12.6.

⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid

Even though Mississippi’s rules are straightforward, there are some pitfalls that psychologists should avoid when acting as a supervisor:

  • Starting Supervision Without Board Approval: Mississippi requires pre-approval of the postdoctoral supervision plan. If a licensure applicant has not completed their postdoc year at the time of application, they must submit a supervision plan to the Board for approval before beginning the supervised work. Failing to secure this approval (in essence, not “registering” the supervisee or supervision arrangement with the Board) can result in the hours not counting toward the licensure requirement.

  • Improper or Incomplete Documentation: Proper documentation of supervision is crucial. Mississippi will require evidence of the supervised experience when the supervisee applies for licensure. Documentation issues include missing or incomplete supervision logs, lack of signed verification from the supervisor, or failure to document the nature of the supervised duties. Pitfall: If you as the supervisor do not keep thorough records (e.g. dates and hours of supervision, content reviewed, client contact hours, etc.) or if you neglect to fill out required Board forms/attestations of supervision, the supervisee’s hours may be disqualified. Always use the Board’s supervision verification form (or provide a detailed completion letter) and ensure it’s fully and accurately completed.

  • Supervisor Not Meeting Requirements at Time of Supervision: Mississippi’s Board will scrutinize whether the supervisor met all eligibility criteria during the supervision period. For example, if your license lapsed or you dropped below the 12-hour facility work minimum at any point, supervision during that time might be invalid. A supervisor who doesn’t continuously meet the state requirements (license in good standing, on-site/contracted presence, etc.) risks the supervisee’s hours being nullified. Make sure you maintain your licensure (renew on time, complete CEs, etc.) and continue to fulfill the criteria (hours at facility, no dual role, etc.) for the entire duration of the supervision. If any circumstance changes (e.g., you change jobs or cannot be on-site as required), address it immediately (perhaps arrange a new qualified supervisor or update the supervision plan with the Board) so the supervisee’s experience remains valid.

By being aware of these pitfalls, both supervisors and supervisees can ensure the postdoctoral supervised experience in Mississippi goes smoothly and counts toward licensure as intended.
