How a Psychologist in New Mexico Can Serve as a Clinical Supervisor

If you're a licensed psychologist (LP) in New Mexico and interested in supervising future clinicians, it's essential to understand the state’s rules and qualifications. This guide will help you navigate the New Mexico clinical supervisor requirements, including eligibility, continuing education (CE) obligations, and pitfalls to avoid.

🧩 Supervisor Eligibility Requirements (NMAC 16.22.6.9)

To serve as a clinical supervisor in New Mexico, psychologists must meet specific state board requirements. Here are the main qualifications:

  • Must Hold a Current New Mexico Psychologist License
    • The supervisor must have an active, unrestricted New Mexico psychologist license with no current disciplinary actions.
  • Primary Responsibility for Supervisee’s Professional Growth
    • The supervisor must maintain overall responsibility for the supervisee’s clinical development.
    • Specific skill training may be delegated, but the primary supervisor remains accountable.
  • Clinically and Professionally Responsible for All Services
    • Supervisors are responsible for overseeing all psychological services and ensuring ethical standards.
    • They must also be available for emergency consultation when client-related decisions arise.
  • Limit on Number of Supervisees
    • Supervisors must ensure they have the capacity to oversee all supervisees effectively. The welfare of the supervisees and clients should be prioritized.
  • Ethical and Relationship Boundaries
    • Supervisors cannot supervise family members or enter dual relationships (business, romantic, financial) that could compromise objectivity.
  • Required Supervision Schedule
    • One-on-one supervision is required for at least 46 hours per year. Telesupervision is equivalent to face-to-face supervision (no minimum in-person percentage specified for postdoctoral supervision).
  • Supervisory Plan Submission
    • A detailed plan must be submitted before supervision begins, outlining supervision hours, duties, and supervisor responsibilities.
    • The Board reviews and responds to the plan within 60 days.
  • Accountability and Records
    • Supervisors must maintain records of supervision dates, duration, and topics discussed.
    • All public communications must identify the primary supervisor as responsible for the services provided.
  • Compliance and Discipline
    • Supervision hours will not count if conducted outside these rules. Supervisors may face disciplinary action for non-compliance.

🕓 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Requirements (NMAC 16.22.9.8)

It is important to note that there are no separate Continuing Education (CE) requirements for supervisors beyond the standard CE requirements for licensed psychologists in New Mexico. As clinical supervisors are licensed psychologists, they must fulfill the general CE requirements for license renewal every two years.

The following are the CE (CPE) requirements for renewing a psychology license in New Mexico:

Total Hours Required:

  • 40 hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) for licensed psychologists.
  • 60 hours for psychologists who hold a prescribing certificate.

Categories of CE (NMAC 16.22.9.9):

  • Category I: Formal programs such as workshops, seminars, and live webinars. At least 15 hours of the total 40 hours must come from Category I activities.
  • Category II: More flexible learning options, including independent study or home study programs, which can be counted toward the remaining CE hours.

Specific Areas of Focus (NMAC 16.22.9.9(C)-(F)):

  • 2+ hours must focus on cultural diversity or health disparities.
  • 4+ hours must focus on equity and inclusion.
  • 4+ hours must be dedicated to ethics.

Approved Sponsors:

  • CE programs must be accredited by recognized organizations, such as the American Psychological Association (APA) or the New Mexico Psychological Association (NMPA).

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Psychologists are required to submit proof of completed CE hours when renewing their license. The Board may audit compliance, so it’s essential to maintain detailed records of the CE programs attended.

For further details on the CE requirements, refer to New Mexico Administrative Code, Title 16, Chapter 22, Part 9

⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid

  • Supervisees Not Being Registered: Ensure that your supervisees are properly registered with the New Mexico Board of Psychologist Examiners.

  • Improper Documentation: Failing to document supervision hours or topics can invalidate the hours toward licensure. Ensure all records are maintained and accurate.

  • Supervisor Not Meeting State Requirements: It's crucial to ensure that both you and your supervisee meet the state’s qualifications throughout the supervision process.
