How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ALPS) in West Virginia
If you're a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in West Virginia aiming to advance your career by becoming an Approved Licensed Professional Supervisor (ALPS), it's essential to understand the specific requirements set by the West Virginia Board of Examiners in Counseling (WVBEC). 📋 ALPS Requirements in West Virginia
To qualify as an ALPS, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Licensure and Experience
Licensure Duration: Hold a permanent LPC license for at least two (2) years.
Counseling Experience: Accumulate a minimum of five (5) years of counseling experience, which can be licensed or unlicensed but must be documented.
2. Clinical Supervision Training
LPCs with Less Than 10 Years of Experience: Complete 30 contact hours in clinical counseling supervision.
LPCs with 10 or More Years of Experience: Complete 15 contact hours in clinical counseling supervision.
These hours can be obtained through:
A one-semester hour graduate course (equivalent to 15 contact hours) from an accredited institution.
Continuing education from an approved provider.
All training must include content and experiences relevant to supervising counselors.
3. Additional Application Materials
Applicants must submit:
A Professional Statement detailing their counseling philosophy, supervision approach, and counseling experience.
Documentation of a stable employment history and skills necessary to address all core areas of practice as outlined in subsection 6.1.b of the licensing rule and the ACA Code of Ethics.
There is no fee associated with applying for the ALPS credential.

🔁 ALPS Renewal Requirements
To maintain your ALPS status, the following continuing education requirements must be met:
Total CE Hours: Complete 35 continuing education hours every two years.
Ethics Training: Include 3 hours in ethics, based on or including the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics.
Veterans' Issues: Include 2 hours specific to veterans and/or families of veterans.
Clinical Supervision Training: Complete an additional 3 contact hours in clinical supervision training.
These hours can be part of the 20 hours of allowable home study or formal programs required.
All courses must be approved by NBCC, ACA, or WVBEC.
