How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor for LPCs in Colorado

If you're a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Colorado aiming to expand your professional role by becoming an approved clinical supervisor, it's essential to understand the state's specific requirements and how to meet them effectively.​


Colorado's Clinical Supervisor Requirements for LPCs

As of September 1, 2021, the Colorado State Board of Licensed Professional Counselor Examiners mandates that LPCs must fulfill the following criteria to provide clinical supervision:

1. Post-Graduate Clinical Experience:

  • Accumulate three years or 3,000 hours of post-graduate clinical experience as a counselor.

2. Educational Training in Clinical Supervision:

  • Successfully complete one of the following:

    • A minimum of a two-credit-hour graduate course on clinical supervision from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs(CACREP) -accredited or equivalent program.

    • A minimum of six clock-hours of clinical supervision training covering the following content areas:

      • Role and functions of clinical supervisors

      • Models and methods of clinical supervision

      • Supervisory relationship issues

      • Cultural issues in clinical supervision

      • Group supervision

      • Legal and ethical issues in clinical supervision

      • Evaluation of supervisee competency and the supervision process

    • Hold the Approved Clinical Supervisor(ACS) certification from the Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE).

    • Possess a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs( CACREP)-accredited or equivalent program, or another counseling doctorate with a supervision component.

3. Renewal Requirements:

  • Complete three Professional Development Hours(PDH) specific to clinical supervision during each renewal cycle.
