How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor for LPCs in Alabama

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor for LPCs in Alabama

Becoming an approved clinical supervisor is a significant career milestone for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) in Alabama. Supervisors play a vital role in shaping the next generation of clinicians, promoting ethical practice, and advancing the counseling profession. If you're a licensed counselor in Alabama aiming to become an LPC-S (Licensed Professional Counselor – Supervisor), it’s essential to meet the state’s specific supervision training and continuing education (CE) requirements.

At Telehealth Certification Institute, LLC (TCI), we specialize in helping counselors nationwide meet their clinical supervision training goals—including those required by the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling (ABEC). Whether you're preparing to apply for supervisor status or seeking CE hours to renew your LPC-S credential, we provide the courses and support you need.

Alabama LPC Clinical Supervisor Requirements

Initial Approval Requirements for LPC-S in Alabama:

To become an approved clinical supervisor in Alabama, counselors must:

  • Hold an active LPC license for at least five years, with continuous full-time clinical practice (20+ hours per week).

  • Complete an ABEC-approved supervision training within the three years prior to application.

The training must include:

  • A minimum of 24 contact hours related to clinical supervision, including theoretical models, practical applications, ethics, and ABEC regulations.

  • At least 2 contact hours focused on the ethics and practices of virtual supervision.

To provide virtual supervision (also referred to as telesupervision) in Alabama, LPC-S applicants must complete a one-time requirement of 2 continuing education contact hours focused on the ethics and practices of virtual supervision. According to the ABEC regulations:

“To be able to provide virtual supervision for licensure, the Supervising Counselor must complete, in the Supervising Counselor training or in other independent CE trainings, two (2) continuing education contact hours in the practices and ethics of providing virtual supervision. This two (2) hour training requirement must only be completed ONCE to be able to offer distance/virtual supervision as an LPC-S.

You can find these requirements in the official ABEC rulebook here: 👉 ABEC Rule 255-X-3-.03 – Supervising Counselors

Renewal Requirements for LPC-S Supervisors:

To maintain LPC-S status, counselors must complete:

  • 5 formal CE contact hours in supervision during each 2-year LPC renewal cycle.

  • These 5 hours can be applied toward the required 40 CE hours for LPC renewal but must be separate from CE awarded for active supervision hours.
