If you're an Arizona Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) aspiring to become an approved clinical supervisor, understanding the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners (AZBBHE) requirements is crucial. Becoming an approved clinical supervisor enhances your professional credibility, expands your career opportunities, and positions you to mentor the next generation of mental health counselors.
Arizona LPC Clinical Supervisor CE Requirements
To qualify as a clinical supervisor in Arizona, LPCs must meet the criteria outlined in AZBBHE Regulation R4-6-214. This includes both educational requirements and specific state-mandated training.
🟢 Initial Approval Requirements
To become an approved clinical supervisor, an LPC must:
1. Complete one of the following:
a. At least 12 hours of training that meets the standards specified in R4-6-802(D) and includes instruction in:
✅ The roles and responsibilities of a clinical supervisor
✅ Skills in providing effective oversight and guidance to supervisees who diagnose, create treatment plans, and treat clients
✅ Supervisory methods and techniques
✅ Fair and accurate evaluation of a supervisee’s ability to plan and implement clinical assessment and treatment
💡 Recommended TCI courses to meet these requirements:
Foundations of Supervision: Preparing for Effective Supervision
To fully meet all requirements, we also recommend completing a course from another provider that specifically addresses “skills in providing oversight to supervisees who diagnose, treat, and plan.”
OR
b. Hold an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS) credential from the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) / Center for Credentialing & Education (CCE)
c. Hold a clinical supervisor certification from the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC)
d. Be a clinical member with an approved supervisor designation from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)
2. Complete a three-clock hour Clinical Supervision Tutorial on Arizona Statutes/Regulations
⚠️ Important: This tutorial is a mandatory requirement.
Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) does not currently offer this 3-hour Arizona-specific course. It must be completed through another provider approved by AZBBHE.
🔁 Renewal Requirements (Every Three Years)
To maintain approval as a clinical supervisor, LPCs must complete at least 9 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision. This CE must:
✅ Meet the standards specified in R4-6-802(D)
✅ Concern clinical supervision
✅ Address the same four supervision-related topics listed above:
Roles/responsibilities
Skills in oversight of diagnosis, planning, and treatment
Supervisory methods and techniques
Evaluation of supervisee competence
✅ Include the 3-hour Clinical Supervision Tutorial on Arizona Statutes/Regulations
⚠️ Reminder: TCI does not currently offer this required 3-hour tutorial. It must be completed separately through an AZBBHE-approved provider.
