How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Florida as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you're a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Florida, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor the next generation of therapists while expanding your professional leadership. But Florida’s clinical supervisor requirements are detailed—and failure to meet them exactly can result in your supervisee’s hours being disqualified.
This guide explains how to become a supervisor in Florida, including who qualifies, the specific training requirements, how to maintain your status, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet Florida clinical supervisor requirements.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
A qualified supervisor for Florida MFT interns must meet one of the following equivalency pathways, as defined in Rule 64B4-21.007 of the Florida Administrative Code:
You must:
✅ Hold an active Florida license as a marriage and family therapist
OR
✅ Be licensed or certified as an MFT in another state (or reside in a state where licensure is not required) and can document:
A minimum of six (6) semester or eight (8) quarter hours of graduate coursework in MFT systemic theories and techniques, and
Five (5) years of clinical experience as a marriage and family therapist
OR
✅ Be designated as an Approved Supervisor by the AAMFT
OR
✅ Be licensed as a Clinical Social Worker or Mental Health Counselor in Florida (or the state where supervision occurred), and can document:
The same graduate coursework listed above, and
Five (5) years of clinical MFT experience, two (2) of which may be earned during a post-master’s clinical internship
➕ Additional Experience and Training Requirements
Regardless of your licensure pathway, you must also:
✅ Have at least five (5) total years of clinical experience, including:
Three (3) years post-licensure, and
Two (2) years of experience which may be completed during a post-master’s internship
AND
✅ Have completed, after licensure, one of the following:
A graduate-level academic course in supervision that meets Rule 64B4-6.0025
A continuing education course in supervision that meets the same rule
Earned the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation

✅ Course Format:
Must be 12 clock hours
Must be delivered live, using didactic and interactive instruction

Allow real-time interaction with the instructor
Monitor attendance
Minimize distractions
✅ Required Learning Objectives:
Participants must gain the ability to:
Understand major models of supervision (for clinical social work, MFT, and mental health counseling)
Develop a personal model of supervision
Understand the co-evolving dynamics in the therapist-client and supervisor-therapist-client relationship
Identify distinctive issues that arise in supervision
Address contextual variables such as culture, gender, power, and economics

Understand the role of evaluation in supervision
🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
Florida requires all qualified supervisors to complete 4 hours of supervisory training continuing education every third biennium (i.e., once every 6 years).
“Every third biennium, a qualified supervisor shall obtain 4 hours of supervisory training continuing education.”
Required topics for this renewal training include:
Changes to Florida laws and rules related to interns and supervisors
Electronic delivery systems for supervision and ensuring confidentiality
Ethical, legal, and regulatory issues (including documentation of supervision)
Research-based supervision models
Supervision challenges and best practices
Cultural factors affecting the supervisory relationship
Supervisor and intern accountability
Business aspects of clinical supervision
Ethical/legal considerations of teletherapy
✅ These hours also count toward your Florida license renewal CE requirements.
📘 General Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for Florida LMFT License Renewal
In addition to any Qualified Supervisor-specific requirements, Florida LMFTs must complete continuing education each biennium to renew their license.
Florida’s LMFT CE subject areas include:
General Hours: 25
Medical Errors: 2 (must be taken from a Board-approved Medical Errors provider; approved courses are listed in CE Broker)
Ethics and Boundaries OR Telehealth: 3 (must be taken in alternating biennial renewal periods)
Laws and Rules: 3 (required every third biennium; included in the 25 general hours)
Domestic Violence: 2 (required every third biennium; included in the 25 general hours)
Qualified Supervisor Training: 4 (required every third biennium for Qualified Supervisors only; included in the 25 general hours)
✅ Total: 30 hours per biennium
⚠️ Not all subjects (such as Laws & Rules, Domestic Violence, and Qualified Supervisor Training) are required every biennium. For the most accurate, current breakdown, see the table under Continuing Education on the Florida Board website:

🏠 Home Study (Self-Paced) CE
The Florida Board states there is no limit on the number of home study (asynchronous) CE hours that may be used toward LMFT license renewal.
(Note: this does not change the requirement that the initial 12-hour supervisor training must be completed in a live, interactive format.)
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Florida’s supervision regulations are strict. Avoid these mistakes:
❌ Supervising interns who are not registered with the Florida Board
❌ Taking a course that does not meet Rule 64B4-6.0025 (e.g., self-paced or not interactive)
❌ Inadequate documentation of supervision hours or session content
❌ Letting your license lapse or failing to renew your 4-hour CE requirement
❌ Providing supervision before completing the required training post-licensure
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) provides supervision-focused continuing education through flexible, online formats designed for busy professionals. Please note that TCI provides continuing education courses only, not university-level training.
🎓 Recommended Courses:
✅ 10-CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle (For Renewal)
Our 10-CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle provides supervision-focused continuing education that can help Qualified Supervisors meet portions of Florida’s renewal training topic areas, including:
Supervision models
Cultural factors and competency in supervision
Foundations and best practices of supervision
⚠️ Important Florida note: Florida’s Qualified Supervisor renewal training must include content on changes to Florida laws and rules related to interns and supervisors. Our bundle does not include Florida Laws & Rules content, so you may need an additional Florida-specific course to fully satisfy the Board’s renewal requirements.
✅ Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses
Prefer to choose your own topics? Browse our catalog of individual clinical supervision CE courses, covering many core supervision and professional practice topics relevant to Florida license renewal and supervisor development. This is a great option if you're focusing on specific supervision skill sets or content areas.
While Florida licensees should always confirm current Board requirements (including any Florida-specific course mandates), the courses below may be used toward some topic areas commonly required for general license renewal, such as ethics/telehealth and clinical skill development:
TeleMental Health Training Certificate Program — Supports telehealth-focused CE and applied tele-mental health competencies.
Telehealth Law and Ethics — Supports ethics and boundaries / telehealth-related topic areas (note: not Florida Laws & Rules-specific).
Telehealth Clinical Skills — Supports telehealth clinical competency and best practices for remote care delivery.
Couples, Marriage and Family Courses — Supports general LMFT clinical CE hours and relationship-focused skill development. (Florida licensees should confirm whether a specific course is designated/approved for Florida’s Domestic Violence subject requirement.)
⚠️ Florida-specific note: We do not offer a Florida Laws & Rules course. If Florida requires Florida-specific Laws & Rules hours for your renewal cycle, you may need an additional Board-approved Florida-specific course to satisfy that requirement.
✅ 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle
Our 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle offers supervision-focused continuing education covering topics such as ethics, supervision methods, and telesupervision. It can support your preparation for Florida’s supervision training requirements by providing substantial supervision education; however, it does not include Florida-specific laws and rules content, so Florida licensees may need an additional Florida-approved course to meet all Board requirements.
For other CE sources, the official Florida Mental Health Professions site directs licensees to Board-approved CE courses through CE Broker. You can browse approved LMFT courses here:
