How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Indiana as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Indiana, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor new therapists, expand your leadership skills, and help shape the future of the profession. But before you begin supervising, it’s critical to understand the Indiana clinical supervisor requirements—even one missed detail could result in your supervisee’s hours being rejected.

This guide explains how to become a supervisor in Indiana, including who qualifies under state board rules, ongoing CE requirements, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet your Indiana supervision training requirements for MFTs.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Who Qualifies Under Indiana State Board Rules?
According to 839 IAC 1-4-5, you may serve as a clinical supervisor for MFT licensure applicants in Indiana under one of the following two designations:

You qualify as a Qualified Supervisor if you are:

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Indiana does not require additional CE hours specifically for supervisors. All licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs)—whether they supervise or not—must meet the state’s general continuing education requirements outlined in 839 IAC 1-6-3.

📆 Renewal Schedule
  • Each renewal period spans two years, from April 1 of an even-numbered year to March 31 of the next even-numbered year.
✅ CE Requirements Per Renewal Cycle
  • 20 CEUs per year, totaling 40 CEUs per renewal cycle

  • At least 10 CEUs per year must be Category I, from approved providers

  • At least 1 CEU per year must focus on ethics and professional conduct, including boundary issues (this must also be Category I)

🧠 What Is “Category I” Continuing Education?
Category I CEUs are defined in 839 IAC 1-6-1(c) as formal programming, including:

  • Formally organized courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, and institutes

  • Home study programs (e.g., online, audio, or video-based) that are accredited by board-approved organizations

  • Presenting, teaching, or authoring academic work (with restrictions and documentation)

🟡 Note: Category II CEUs (less formal/self-directed learning) are allowed for the remaining 10 CEUs per year but do not count toward ethics hours.

➕ Multiple Licenses?
  • If you hold more than one behavioral health license (e.g., MFT + LCSW), CEUs may be applied across licenses.
⏳ First-Time Licensees
  • Licensed 12–24 months before renewal: Only 20 CEUs required (at least 50% must be Category I)
  • Licensed less than 12 months before renewal: No CE required for that cycle

📂 Additional Rules

  • CEUs must be earned within the renewal period — no carryover allowed

  • Licensees must retain proof of CE for 4 years after the renewal cycle ends

  • CE completed for another state license may be applied to Indiana if you hold both

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Incomplete or improper documentation of supervision hours—missing signatures or required forms can lead to disqualification.
  • Supervisor not meeting eligibility requirements at the time of supervision—your qualifications must be valid for the entire supervision period.
