How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Iowa as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Iowa, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor new therapists, strengthen the profession, and expand your leadership skills. But Iowa’s clinical supervisor requirements are specific — and missing even one detail could mean your supervisee’s hours don’t count toward licensure.
This guide breaks down the Iowa clinical supervisor requirements for MFTs, including who qualifies under state board rules, renewal and CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet Iowa supervision training requirements for MFTs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
Who qualifies under state board rules?
According to the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science, a clinical supervisor must satisfy all of the following requirements, per Rule 481–891.7(2) of the Iowa Administrative Code:
Hold an active license as a marriage and family therapist, independent social worker, or mental health counselor with at least three years of independent post-licensure clinical experience.
Complete at least one of the following:
At least 6 hours of continuing education in supervision, or
One master’s-level course in supervision.
Be knowledgeable of the applicable ethical code and licensing rules governing the supervisee.
If a supervisor does not meet these requirements, their request must be approved by the board before beginning supervision.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
All licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in Iowa — including clinical supervisors — must meet continuing education (CE) requirements set by the Iowa Board of Behavioral Science, as outlined in Iowa Administrative Code 481—892.2 and 892.3(3).

🧠 Mandatory Reporter Training — Required Separately
Mandatory abuse reporting training is required by Iowa law if you regularly provide services to children or dependent adults. This training is not part of your 40-hour CE requirement and must be completed through the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) — not third-party CE providers.
- Initial training: 2 hours (within 6 months of employment or before certification expires)
- Recertification: 1 hour every 3 years

🟡 New Licensees
- Newly licensed MFTs are exempt from CE for their first renewal
- CE earned between initial licensure and the second renewal may be applied to that renewal cycle
- Mandatory reporter training timelines still apply
- CE hours may not be carried over to the next renewal cycle
- CE must be from board-approved providers
- All CE and mandatory training costs are the responsibility of the licensee
