How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Kansas as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Kansas, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor new professionals, strengthen the field, and expand your leadership skills. But Kansas clinical supervisor requirements are detailed — and missing even one step could mean your supervisee’s hours won’t count toward licensure.
This guide explains how to become a supervisor in Kansas, including eligibility requirements from the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board (BSRB), renewal CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet Kansas’ supervision training requirements for MFT’s.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To become a board-approved clinical supervisor in Kansas, you must meet the qualifications in K.S.A. 65-6414, K.A.R. 102-5-7a, and K.A.R. 102-5-7b. Here's what that entails:
📃 Clinical Supervisor Licensure & Experience Requirements (K.A.R. 102-5-7a)
You must:
Be a Kansas-licensed Clinical Marriage and Family Therapist (LCMFT) with at least 2 years of post-licensure independent clinical MFT experience, OR
Under board-approved extenuating circumstances, be another behavioral health provider whose scope of practice includes diagnosing and treating mental disorders, and who has at least 2 years of independent clinical MFT experience.
In addition:
You must not have any disciplinary actions that would prohibit you from supervising.
You must submit a formal application and fee to the board to obtain supervisor approval.
📚 Supervision Training Requirements (K.A.R. 102-5-7a and K.A.R. 102-5-7b)
You must complete one of the following:
15 hours of continuing education in clinical supervision, OR
One semester credit hour of graduate-level coursework in clinical supervision from a board-approved institution
Your training must include all content areas listed in K.A.R. 102-5-7b, including:
Supervision models and best practices
Legal, ethical, and risk management issues
Cultural and contextual factors
Supervisor-supervisee relationships
Structuring supervision and documentation
Kansas MFT statutes and regulations
⚠️ Note: TCI does not offer training on Kansas MFT laws and regulations. Supervisors must fulfill that portion through another board-approved provider.
📄 Postgraduate Supervision Duties (K.A.R. 102-5-7a)
To supervise an MFT working toward clinical licensure:
You must be a board-approved clinical supervisor
You must follow strict structure and documentation requirements:
1 hour of supervision per 15 hours of client contact
Supervision must occur twice per month, with at least one individual session
Maintain signed supervision training plans and logs, and provide board documentation

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
All Kansas MFTs must complete:
40 CE hours every 2 years
Of those 40 hours:
✅ 3 hours in professional ethics
✅ 6 hours in diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders (K.S.A. 65-6407(b))
📓 Additional CE for Supervisors (K.S.A. 65-6414)
Board-approved clinical supervisors must complete:
3 CE hours in supervisory skill enhancement, including:
At least 1 hour in ethics of supervision
This is in addition to the 40 CE hours required for license renewal.

⚠️ Pitfalls That Can Invalidate Supervision Hours
Poor or incomplete documentation of supervision sessions, dates, or signatures.
Supervisor approval lapse — hours completed while you’re not in approved status may be rejected.
Training that doesn’t cover all required content areas — the board may deny your application.
