How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Kentucky as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Kentucky as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

Becoming a board-approved clinical supervisor as an MFT in Kentucky can advance both your career and the quality of future clinicians. If you’re wondering how to become a supervisor in Kentucky, here’s a clear, step-by-step guide.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Who Qualifies — Board-Approved Supervisor Status (per 201 KAR 32:035)
Under Section 2 of 201 KAR 32:035, effective January 1, 2016, a board-approved supervisor in Kentucky must meet one of the following criteria:

  • AAMFT-approved supervisor, in good standing, licensed in Kentucky, with at least two (2) years of post-licensure MFT practice experience.

  • AAMFT supervisor candidate, in good standing, licensed in Kentucky, with at least three (3) years of post-licensure MFT practice experience.

  • A Kentucky-licensed MFT in good standing, with at least five (5) years of post-licensure MFT practice experience, and at least the last eighteen (18) months of that experience must have been in Kentucky.

Note: Any supervisors who held board-approved status prior to December 31, 2015—whether AAMFT-approved, supervisor candidates, or non-AAMFT-approved—can maintain that status.

Required Continuing Education Before Approval
Per Section 2(4) of 201 KAR 32:035, MFTs who are not AAMFT-approved supervisors or supervisor candidates must:

  • Complete six (6) hours of board-approved continuing education (CE) in supervision within two (2) years prior to applying for board-approved supervisor status.

Each course must be live or online and cover the following key areas:

  • Kentucky law surrounding marriage and family therapy — specifically KRS 335.300–335.399 and 201 KAR Chapter 32

  • Theories of supervision

  • Ethical issues in supervision

  • Supervisor responsibilities, such as logs, treatment planning, and recording.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal Continuing Education Requirements

To maintain board-approved supervisor status, Kentucky requires ongoing CE each year:

  • Non-AAMFT-approved supervisors: Must complete at least two (2) hours per year of CE in supervision, covering the same four topics listed above (Kentucky law, theories, ethics, responsibilities). These hours can be included in the total hours required for licensure renewal.

  • AAMFT-approved supervisors or supervisor candidates: Must complete at least one (1) hour per year of CE focused solely on Kentucky MFT-related law (KRS 335.300–335.399 and 201 KAR Ch. 32).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisees not being registered with the board: Every supervisee must hold a valid MFT-Associate permit and have an approved supervision plan on file.

  • Improper documentation of supervision hours: Supervisors must log hours, include group vs individual split, treatment planning, and raw data (e.g., live observation, recordings), as defined in the regulation.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements at time of supervision: You must have completed the required pre-approval supervision training before starting to supervise; otherwise hours may not count.
