How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Louisiana as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Louisiana as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Louisiana, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor future professionals, expand your career, and strengthen the field. But Louisiana clinical supervisor requirements are specific—missing even one detail could mean your supervisee’s hours won’t count toward licensure.

This guide explains how to become a supervisor in Louisiana, including exact state board rules, Louisiana supervision training requirements for MFT’s, CE renewal expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet CE requirements.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Under the Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 46, Part LX, § 3317.A, LMFTs can qualify as an LMFT-Approved Supervisor in one of two ways:

Option 1 – Coursework, Experience, and Supervision of Supervision

  • Complete either a graduate-level course in MFT supervision or a board-approved equivalent (15 hours didactic + 15 hours interactive with at least four participants).

  • Have a minimum of two years of post-licensure LMFT experience.

  • Complete 36 hours of supervision-of-supervision from an LMFT-Approved Supervisor.

For LMFTs seeking initial supervisor approval, the 30-hour Fundamentals of Supervision course offered by AAMFT is often the most direct and widely recognized training option.

Option 2 – AAMFT Approved Supervisor

  • Hold the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation.

  • Apply to the Louisiana board with documentation and receive Advisory Committee recommendation.

Additional Rules

  • You may not supervise more than 10 supervisees at one time (including PLMFTs and licensees in other disciplines).

  • Only supervision by an LMFT-Approved Supervisor or LMFT-Registered Supervisor Candidate counts toward licensure.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Per LAC 46:LX.3317.E, Board-Approved Supervisors must renew every four years and:

  • Maintain an active LMFT license in good standing.

  • Complete six (6) clock hours of CE in clinical MFT supervision during each renewal period. Qualifying topics include supervision theories, ethics, legal issues, case management, or setting-specific issues. These hours can also count toward LMFT licensure renewal requirements.

  • Attend the board-approved orientation/renewal workshop for supervisors (counts toward the 6 hours).
Note: This specific board-approved orientation is not offered by TCI and must be completed through the Louisiana licensing board or another board-approved provider.

  • Submit a renewal application with any updates to your statement of practice.

  • Pay a $100 renewal fee.

If your approval lapses for more than two years, you must reapply and meet current requirements.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisees not registered – Hours won’t count unless the supervisee is properly registered with the board.

  • Incomplete documentation – Missing dates, session length, or supervisor credentials can invalidate hours.

  • Not meeting requirements at the time of supervision – If you weren’t fully qualified when you started, hours won’t be accepted.
