How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Louisiana as an LCSW
Becoming an approved clinical supervisor in Louisiana is an opportunity to lead, mentor, and make a lasting impact on the behavioral health profession. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), guiding the next generation of clinicians enhances your professional growth and strengthens the field at large.
This article walks you through Louisiana clinical supervisor requirements, including licensure, supervision CE training, and documentation rules—plus how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your professional development as a clinical supervisor.
✅ Louisiana Clinical Supervisor Requirements
Who Qualifies?
To become a Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor (BACS) in Louisiana, you must meet all of the following qualifications under Louisiana Administrative Code, Title 46, § XXV-507:
“To qualify for the Board-Approved Clinical Supervisor (BACS) designation, an LCSW shall:
Hold a current license as an LCSW;
Have three years full-time post-LCSW clinical experience;
Submit two letters of reference, at least one of which shall be from an LCSW;
Complete the board orientation workshop;
Complete a board-approved supervision workshop, which shall include theory, techniques, and documentation procedures for supervision toward licensure.”
You must complete all of the above requirements prior to providing any supervision for licensure purposes.
🎓 Initial Supervision Training Requirements in Louisiana
Before applying for BACS status and beginning to supervise, LCSWs in Louisiana must complete:
A board-approved supervision workshop covering supervision models, theory and techniques, documentation, and ethics and multicultural issues (must be at least 6.5 clock hours)
A board orientation workshop provided by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners
There is no university coursework requirement, but you must complete CE training that is explicitly approved by the board.
🔁 Ongoing Supervision CE Requirements
To maintain your BACS designation in Louisiana, you must complete three hours of board-approved continuing education in clinical supervision every two years.
If your BACS status lapses, you’ll need to repeat a supervision CE course and the board’s orientation workshop in order to reapply.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Avoid these costly mistakes when providing supervision:
Supervisor Not Yet Approved: You must have BACS status in place at the time supervision occurs—being an LCSW is not enough.
Missing or Improper Documentation: Use official supervision log forms and follow board guidelines for session documentation to ensure hours count toward licensure.
📗 How TCI Supports Supervisory Skill Development (Not BACS Requirements)
While the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers expert-led, online, self-paced continuing education (CE) courses designed for clinical supervisors, please note:
All initial and ongoing supervision CE trainings for BACS designation in Louisiana must be explicitly pre-approved by the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners.
Because of this, TCI courses cannot be used to satisfy the mandatory training and CE requirements for obtaining or renewing your BACS credential (unless you receive explicit approval ahead of time). However, they can support your growth as a clinical supervisor through supplemental education and skill development.
