How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Mississippi as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Mississippi as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Mississippi, earning Board-approved supervisor status allows you to mentor new professionals, expand your expertise, and strengthen the quality of mental health care in the state. However, Mississippi clinical supervisor requirements are specific—missing even one detail could mean your supervisee’s hours won’t count toward licensure.

This guide explains how to become a supervisor in Mississippi, outlines the Mississippi supervision training requirements for MFTs, details renewal expectations, highlights pitfalls, and clarifies how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your professional development through supervision-related training — although TCI’s courses do not fulfill Mississippi’s in-person CE requirements for supervisor approval or renewal.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

You can qualify as a Board-approved MFT supervisor in Mississippi in more than one way, but each path has exact requirements:

For LMFTs who are not AAMFT Approved Supervisors

  • Licensure level – Must hold a current LMFT license in good standing.

  • Experience – At least four consecutive years of verifiable, post-licensure clinical practice as an LMFT.

  • Training – Completion of a Board-approved MFT supervision course with a minimum of 24 contact hours.

⚠️ The Board will not approve self-directed learning projects/activities and/or distance learning/internet (online) learning courses for the supervision CE requirement.

  • Application – Submit a supervisor approval application to the Board and receive written confirmation before beginning supervision.

For AAMFT Supervisor Candidates

  • Licensure level – Must hold a current LMFT license in good standing.

  • Experience – At least four consecutive years of verifiable LMFT-level practice.

  • Supervision of supervision – Must be under supervision-of supervision by an AAMFT Approved Supervisor during the candidacy period.

For AAMFT Approved Supervisors

  • Licensure level – Must have been licensed as an LMFT for at least two years.

  • Application – Submit a supervisor approval application to the Board.

  • Documentation – Provide proof of current status as an AAMFT Approved Supervisor.

Additional Supervisor Requirements for All Approved Supervisors

  • Submit a Supervisor Renewal Form every two years, along with your LMFT renewal (if licensed in Mississippi).

  • Maintain copies of supervisee evaluations and all supervision documentation for at least two calendar years after the supervision contract ends.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

To keep your Mississippi supervisor status active, you must:

  • Complete two (2) hours of Board-approved continuing education in MFT supervision every two years.

  • The first renewal period does not require supervision CE.

  • Supervision CE must be in-person—online or distance-learning courses will not count toward this requirement.

  • Automatic approval is granted for AAMFT or AAMFT division “Supervisor Refresher” courses.

  • The Board does not accept self-directed learning for this requirement.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Missing or incomplete supervision records – You must maintain clear documentation of supervision dates, session lengths, topics covered, and evaluations.

  • Supervising without eligibility – The Board will not count supervision hours completed during a period when the supervisor did not meet all eligibility requirements.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Supports Your Professional Development

Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers a variety of online supervision-related continuing education courses designed to strengthen your skills as a clinical supervisor.

⚠️ Important for Mississippi Licensees:
Mississippi requires in-person, Board-approved supervision education and does not accept online, distance-learning, or self-directed coursework toward its supervision training or renewal CE requirements (Rule 2.2(C)(4)(d)).
Therefore, TCI’s online courses do not meet Mississippi’s supervision CE requirements. These programs are intended for professional development only unless otherwise approved by the Mississippi Board.
