How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Nevada as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Becoming a clinical supervisor in Nevada allows Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) to guide interns, contribute to the profession, and expand their professional roles. The Nevada Board of Examiners for Marriage and Family Therapists and Clinical Professional Counselors establishes specific requirements for this designation. Below is a general overview of eligibility requirements, renewal considerations, common pitfalls, and continuing education options for supervisors.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervisors in Nevada often run into issues that can prevent supervisees’ hours from being accepted:
Unregistered interns: If a supervisee has not been officially registered with the Board, none of the supervision hours will be credited.
Incomplete or missing supervision records: Weekly documentation is required. Without accurate logs, hours may be denied.
Supervisors not meeting qualifications at the time supervision occurs: If you were not fully eligible as a supervisor when providing supervision, the hours will not count.
📘 Continuing Education Options for Clinical Supervisors
Maintaining supervisor status in Nevada requires completing continuing education (CE) hours each renewal cycle in accordance with state regulations.
The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education (CE) courses related to clinical supervision, suicide prevention, ethics, and cultural competency that may be relevant to supervisors seeking professional development.
Please note that TCI provides continuing education (CE) courses only and does not offer university-level academic training. TCI is not pre-approved by the Nevada Board. Acceptance of any CE course toward Nevada licensure renewal is determined by the Nevada Board. Licensees are responsible for verifying whether a specific course will be accepted before enrolling.
Clinical Supervision Certificate Program
The Clinical Supervision Certificate (CSC) Program includes 45 CE hours and provides structured instruction on supervision models, supervisor roles, and ethical responsibilities in clinical supervision. The program includes over 30 hours of supervision-focused content and may be useful for clinicians pursuing advanced training in supervision or credentialing pathways such as the AAMFT Supervisor Candidate designation (subject to that organization’s requirements and documentation standards).
⚠️ The CSC program does not include suicide prevention training. Licensees should ensure they complete any subject-specific CE hours required for renewal.Suicide Prevention and Response
TCI offers suicide prevention and response training designed to strengthen clinicians’ ability to assess and respond to suicide risk in practice.
Licensees should confirm with the Nevada Board whether a particular course satisfies any subject-specific CE requirements for renewal.Cultural Competence Courses
TCI provides courses focused on cultural awareness, competence, and humility in behavioral health practice and supervision.
As with all continuing education, licensees are responsible for confirming whether specific courses will be accepted toward Nevada licensure renewal requirements.Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses
TCI also offers individual clinical supervision courses, allowing clinicians to select targeted professional development based on their learning goals and areas of interest.
Acceptance of CE credit toward Nevada licensure renewal is determined by the Nevada Board, and licensees should verify applicability prior to enrollment.
