How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Oregon as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Oregon as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

Serving as an approved clinical supervisor in Oregon is both a professional milestone and an opportunity to guide the next generation of Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Supervisors play a critical role in mentoring new clinicians, ensuring quality care, and upholding ethical practice.

This guide explains the Oregon clinical supervisor requirements, outlines the supervision-specific CE you need to maintain your status, highlights pitfalls to avoid, and shows how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your training.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements in Oregon

Oregon requires MFTs to hold Approved Supervisor status in order to be placed on the Supervisor Registry and provide full supervision to registered associates (interns).

Most new supervisors begin as Supervisor Candidates under OAR 833-130-0040, which involves:

  • Completing 30 hours of clinical supervision training (must include systems theory for MFTs),

  • Passing the Oregon law and rules exam, and

  • Applying for Supervisor Candidate status with the Board.

🏷️ Approved Supervisor (OAR 833-130-0050)

To be placed on the Supervisor Registry as an Approved Supervisor, MFTs must:

  • ✅ Already have met Supervisor Candidate standards (OAR 833-130-0040).

  • ✅ Hold an active Oregon license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).

  • ✅ Have been licensed for at least 2 years, or hold a national credential such as:

    • AAMFT Approved Supervisor, or

    • NBCC CCE Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS), or

    • Hold a doctoral degree that is accredited by CACREP in the Counselor Education and Supervision specialty area.

  • ✅ Document at least 6 hours of post-licensure supervision of licensee’s clinical supervision.

  • ✅ A minimum of 100 hours of post-licensure supervisory experience supervising registered associates (or equivalent pre-licensed supervisees in other states) or student interns from graduate programs at regionally accredited institutions

  • ✅ Submit a formal request to the Board (as required by OAR 833-130-0020) to be placed on the Supervisor Registry.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Oregon supervisors are also required to complete three hours of continuing education in supervision during every two-year renewal period (in addition to general CE renewal requirements, as outlined in OAR 833-080-0011). This ensures that supervisors remain current with evolving best practices in oversight, ethics, and professional development.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Even experienced supervisors can encounter issues that prevent supervisee hours from being accepted. The most potential mistakes include:

  • Supervisees not registered – Oregon requires supervisees to be formally registered with the Board before they begin accruing hours.

  • Improper documentation – Missing, incomplete, or unsigned supervision logs may lead to rejected hours.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements – If you haven’t met training or CE requirements at the time supervision occurs, the hours may be invalidated.
