How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Texas: A Guide for LPCs

🧭 Texas LPC-Supervisor Requirements


✅ 1. Hold an LPC License in Good Standing for at Least 5 Years

To apply for LPC Supervisor status in Texas, you must have held a full, active LPC license in good standing for a minimum of 60 months (five years).

✅ 2. Complete an Approved LPC Supervisor Training Course

To meet Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) requirements, you must complete one of the following supervision training options:

Option A: Doctoral-Level Supervision Course

Complete a doctoral-level course in supervision of professional counseling or mental health services. The course must be taken for credit at an accredited university and documented on your transcript. It must have been completed within 5 years of your LPC-S application.

Option B: 40-Clock-Hour Supervision Course

Complete a 40-clock-hour supervision course that meets the standards outlined in Texas Administrative Code §681.147. This course must be completed within 2 years of your application and include the following components:

The supervision training must be related to the practice of professional counseling and:

  1. Be taught by an LPC with supervisor status

  2. Be completed within 90 days

  3. Include at least:

    • 3 clock-hours: supervision models

    • 3 clock-hours: supervisory relationship & counselor development

    • 12 clock-hours: supervision methods & multicultural supervision

    • 12 clock-hours: ethics, standards of practice, and legal issues

    • 3 clock-hours: administrative tasks (supervision plans, contracts, recordkeeping)

This structured format ensures all Texas LPC-S applicants receive consistent, high-quality training aligned with state standards.

✅ 3. Submit Your Supervisor Application and Fees

After completing your required training, submit your LPC-S application to BHEC with all applicable fees.

🔄 LPC-S Renewal Requirements in Texas

To maintain your LPC-S status in Texas, you must:

  • Complete 6 hours of continuing education (CE) in supervision during each license renewal period.

  • These 6 hours can be counted toward your required 24 CE hours for LPC license renewal.
