How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

Becoming an approved clinical supervisor is a meaningful step for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Supervisors not only mentor the next generation of clinicians but also ensure that the profession upholds ethical and effective standards of care. This article outlines The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands clinical supervisor requirements, CE renewal obligations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your supervision training needs.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements in the CNMI

To qualify as a clinical supervisor for MFT trainees in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, you must meet the requirements set by the CNMI Health Care Professions Licensing Board (Part 4700):

  • Hold an active license in good standing
You must be licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), psychologist, psychiatrist, or clinical social worker. Other licensed providers may be approved by the Board on a case-by-case basis.

  • Be Board-recognized to supervise
Only professionals approved by the CNMI Health Care Professions Licensing Board may oversee practicum or post-graduate clinical hours. Supervisors must follow all Board standards for supervision and documentation.

  • Comply with tele-supervision rules
Tele-supervision may be permitted at the Board’s discretion. Any supervisor outside the CNMI must hold a valid CNMI license and, if charging for supervision, also maintain a CNMI business license.

🔎 Note: The CNMI does not issue a separate “Supervisor License.” Instead, supervisors must already hold an active professional license (MFT, psychologist, psychiatrist, or social worker) and be recognized by the CNMI Health Care Professions Licensing Board as eligible to oversee practicum or post-graduate clinical hours.

✅ Renewal / CE Requirements for Supervisors in CNMI

While the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands does not require any continuing education (CE) specifically for clinical supervisors, supervisors must maintain an active Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) license in good standing in order to remain eligible to supervise.

🆕 Initial Licensure CE Requirement (CNMI)

Under § 185-10-4745(1), applicants for initial licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the CNMI must complete:

  • Seven (7) CE hours in HIV/AIDS

This requirement applies at the time of initial licensure only and is separate from renewal requirements.

🔁 Biennial Renewal CE Requirements

To keep an MFT license active in the CNMI, the following general CE requirements apply:

  • Total CE Hours: 40 contact hours every two (2) years

  • Required Content: At least 6 contact hours in Law & Ethics and/or Cultural Competency

Under § 185-10-4745(4)(a), acceptable continuing education must include content drawn from recognized professional areas, including but not limited to:

  • Counseling theory, practice, and the helping relationship

  • Human growth and development

  • Social and cultural foundations

  • Group dynamics and counseling

  • Career development and counseling

  • Research and program evaluation

  • Counselor professional identity and practice issues

  • Ethics

  • Multiple sessions/conferences

Licensees are responsible for ensuring that selected CE courses fall within these approved content domains.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Even qualified supervisors sometimes face challenges that can delay or invalidate supervisee hours. Pitfalls include:

  • Supervisees not being registered: If your supervisee is not officially registered with the Board, their hours may not count.

  • Supervision hours not counting: Hours can be rejected due to incomplete logs, missing signatures, or failure to follow Board documentation standards.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements: If you fall behind on CE hours or lose Board recognition, your supervisee’s hours could be invalidated.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

At the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we provide continuing education (CE) courses designed to help MFT supervisors stay competent, confident, and compliant with CNMI’s renewal standards.

Recommended Courses:

  • Clinical Supervision Certificate Program
Our Clinical Supervision Certificate (CSC) Program delivers a comprehensive curriculum covering core supervision competencies and provides 49 CE hours. This exceeds CNMI’s 40-hour biennial renewal requirement and includes ethics-focused content. The program is ideal for supervisors seeking structured, in-depth training in supervision theory, ethics, documentation, and professional practice development.

    ⚠️ CNMI CE Content Note:
Under § 185-10-4745(4)(a), CNMI requires CE to fall within specific professional content domains, including areas such as Human Growth and Development and Multiple Sessions/Conferences. While the CSC program provides substantial supervision and ethics education, licensees may need to complete additional CE in certain content domains (such as Human Growth & Development or approved conferences) to ensure full alignment with CNMI renewal requirements.
