How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor in Washington D.C. as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

Becoming an approved clinical supervisor in Washington D.C. is a significant career milestone for Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs). Supervisors not only shape the next generation of therapists but also uphold professional and ethical standards in the field. Below, we break down the Washington D.C. clinical supervisor requirements, continuing education obligations, and pitfalls, with direct references to the District’s official regulations.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements in Washington D.C.

According to 17 DCMR §7703.4, the Board may approve a supervisor who is not an AAMFT-approved supervisor (automatically a Board-approved supervisor), provided that the intending supervisor meets the following requirements:

  • License requirement: Must hold a license in good standing to practice marriage and family therapy, professional counseling, counseling psychology, psychiatry, or independent clinical social work in the jurisdiction where supervision will occur.

  • Experience requirement: Must have at least five (5) years of clinical experience working with couples and families.

  • Supervision competence: Must have sufficient experience and/or training in clinical supervision.

  • Caseload limit: May not supervise more than five (5) individuals at any given time.

  • Compliance requirement: If not an LMFT, must agree to comply with all statutory and regulatory requirements of MFT practice, and ensure supervisees receive adequate education, training, and mentoring to understand legal and ethical obligations.

📚 Required Supervision Training (Prior to Beginning Supervision)

Under 17 DCMR § 7712.10(c), before initiating supervision, a supervisor must complete:

  • ✅ A minimum of six (6) hours of supervision-specific training

  • ✅ At least three (3) of those hours must be completed in a live, interactive, in-person, face-to-face setting

This training must be completed prior to providing supervision toward licensure requirements.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

In Washington, D.C., Board-approved clinical supervisors must complete supervision-specific continuing education (CE) every two years in order to maintain their approval status.

Specifically, supervisors are required to complete:

  • Six (6) hours of Board-approved supervision training every two years (i.e., each license renewal period)

  • ✅ At least three (3) of those hours must be completed in a live, interactive, in-person format

📖 This requirement is mandated by 17 DCMR § 7712.10(c).

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisees not being properly registered
Supervisors must confirm that supervisees are correctly registered or licensed with the Board before supervision begins.

  • Supervision hours not counting due to improper documentation
Incomplete or missing documentation of supervision sessions can lead to the Board rejecting hours.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements at the time of supervision
Only supervisors approved under AAMFT or licensed in accordance with Board standards are eligible. If this requirement is not met, hours will not be credited.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Supervision CE Requirements

In Washington, D.C., Board-approved clinical supervisors must complete six (6) hours of Board-approved supervision training prior to initiating supervision and must also complete six (6) hours of supervision-specific continuing education every two years to maintain their approval status. In both cases, at least three (3) hours must be completed in a live, interactive, in-person, face-to-face format.

The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers supervision-focused continuing education designed to strengthen supervisory competence and reduce compliance risks. Because D.C.’s in-person, face-to-face hour requirement cannot be met through distance education, supervisors should plan to complete those required in-person hours through an approved in-person provider, and may use TCI training to support additional supervision education and skill development where permitted.
