How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor (LPCC-S) in Ohio

How to Become an Approved Clinical Supervisor (LPCC-S) in Ohio

If you're a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) in Ohio aiming to advance your career by becoming an approved clinical supervisor (LPCC-S), it's essential to understand the specific requirements set by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board. This designation not only enhances your professional credentials but also allows you to supervise and mentor upcoming counselors.

🧾 Ohio LPCC-Supervisor (LPCC-S) Requirements

📌 Initial Requirements

To qualify for the LPCC-S (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor with Supervision designation) in Ohio, you must meet the following criteria, as outlined in Ohio Administrative Code 4757-13-01(E)(1)(a–c):

✅ Clinical Experience

You must complete at least one year and 1,500 hours of post-licensure clinical experience as an LPCC. This experience must include at least one structured supervision experience, which involves:

  • Observing five supervision sessions conducted by an LPCC with a supervision designation (LPCC-S),

  • Completing a one-hour review session with your supervisor to discuss and process those sessions, and

  • Beginning the supervision relationship with an initial face-to-face meeting (which may include videoconferencing) before continuing via phone, videoconference, or in-person.

(See rule 4757-13-01(E)(1)(c))

✅ Supervision Training

You must complete 24 hours of supervision-specific training through either a graduate-level academic course or Board-approved continuing education. This training must include a minimum of 6 hours in each of the following four core areas:

  • The Supervisory Relationship

  • Legal and Ethical Issues in Supervision

  • Cultural Issues in Supervision

  • Models of Supervision

(See rule 4757-13-01(E)(1)(a))

The training can be completed through a single 24-hour course or multiple CE programs, as long as all four required content areas are covered with at least 6 hours each.

🔁 Renewal Requirements

All LPCCs, including those with the LPCC-S designation, must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years. If you renew your license with the supervision designation, you must have completed the supervision hours prior to renewal.
