How to Become & Stay Approved as a Clinical Supervisor in New Mexico (LCSW Guide)

How to Become & Stay Approved as a Clinical Supervisor in New Mexico (LCSW Guide)

Becoming an approved clinical supervisor in New Mexico is both a professional accomplishment and a regulated role. Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) who want to supervise LMSWs on the path to independent licensure must meet specific education, training, and documentation requirements. This article breaks down the New Mexico clinical supervisor requirements, including CE standards, supervisor eligibility, and errors to avoid.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To become a Board-approved supervisor for LMSWs in New Mexico, you must:

  • Hold an active New Mexico LCSW or LISW license
  • Complete a minimum of 6 hours of board-approved training in clinical supervision before applying
  • Submit a Supervisor Application to the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners, which must include:
    • Your current Resume or CV
    • Proof of supervision training (CE certificate)
    • Proof of licensure

🔄 Ongoing & Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain licensure and supervisor status, New Mexico LCSWs must complete the following CE requirements every 2-year renewal cycle:

General License Renewal (All LCSWs)
30 total CEUs, including:

  • At least 20 CEUs from board-approved providers (e.g., NASW, ASWB, NBCC)
  • 6 CEUs in cultural awareness
  • Up to 10 CEUs may be self-directed (e.g., research, reading)

Supervision-Specific Renewal Requirement
Approved supervisors must complete 3 CEUs related to clinical supervision every renewal cycle

📄New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department, Board of Social Work Examiners. (n.d.). Instructors, training requirements, and continuing education.

📄 New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC) § 16.63.1.7(A)(6)(a). Rules of the Board of Social Work Examiners. New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Beginning supervision without Board approval or the required 6-hour training
  • Failing to track or verify CE hours in required categories (e.g., cultural awareness, supervision-specific content)
  • Not maintaining proper supervision documentation, such as supervision logs and session notes
  • Allowing supervision to occur without submitting your Supervisor Application and CV in advance

Even experienced clinicians can fall out of compliance if documentation or CE tracking is overlooked.
