How to Provide Clinical Supervision in Connecticut as an LCSW
Are you a Connecticut-based Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) ready to mentor the next generation of clinicians? Serving as a clinical supervisor allows you to support professional growth, shape the field of social work, and deepen your own clinical expertise. While Connecticut does not issue a separate supervisor license, the state outlines who is eligible to supervise and what is required to maintain that role.
This guide explains how to serve as a LCSW supervisor in Connecticut, including license requirements, continuing education (CE) for renewal, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you grow in your supervisory role
✅ Who Can Provide Clinical Supervision in Connecticut?
According to Connecticut General Statutes Chapter 383b, clinical supervision for Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs) working toward LCSW licensure may be provided by any of the following Connecticut-licensed professionals:
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Licensed Psychologist
Licensed Physician
Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
🔹 Only a Connecticut-licensed LCSW can supervise LMSWs for clinical hours that count toward LCSW licensure.
📋 LCSW Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To supervise LCSW candidates in Connecticut, you must:
✅ Hold an active Connecticut LCSW license
✅ Be in good standing with the Department of Public Health (DPH)
❌ There is no separate supervisor license, application, or approval process
However, some employers or agencies may require or prefer formal supervision training to ensure best practices are followed.
📘 Continuing Education (CE) Requirements for LCSWs
To maintain your LCSW license—and remain eligible to supervise—Connecticut requires:
15 hours of CE annually, including:
At least 5 hours of live CE (in-person or synchronous online)
No more than 10 hours of asynchronous/self-paced CE
1 hour in cultural competency
2 hours on veterans’ mental health, completed once every six years, and during your first renewal cycle

🎓 How TCI Helps You Succeed as a Clinical Supervisor
While Connecticut does not mandate supervisor-specific CE, many organizations strongly encourage it. At the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we offer flexible, high-quality training programs that help LCSWs enhance their supervision skills while fulfilling CE requirements.
✅ 15 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle
This all-in-one bundle is designed specifically for LCSWs who want to meet annual CE requirements while developing stronger supervision skills.
It fulfills and exceeds Connecticut’s 10-hour self-study CE limit, offering a convenient and comprehensive way to work toward your required hours asynchronously. Note that this means you will still need to complete an additional 5 hours of "synchronous online education" - live online classes that are conducted in real time.
