How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in New Hampshire as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
Serving as a clinical supervisor in New Hampshire allows Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) to mentor the next generation, strengthen the profession, and advance their own careers. The New Hampshire Board of Mental Health Practice outlines very specific requirements for supervisors—both for initial approval and for ongoing renewal.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
According to N.H. Admin. Code Mhp 302.03, to qualify as a clinical supervisor you must:
Education/Training (Complete one of the following):
Complete a graduate-level course in clinical supervision;
Hold a clinical supervision certificate approved by:
Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA)
American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT);
Complete 12 CE hours in clinical supervision before beginning a supervisory relationship (from an approved Category A activity under Mhp 402.02).
Licensure & Experience
Be a currently licensed MFT in New Hampshire.
Have at least 2 years of post-licensure clinical experience.
Hold an active, non-probationary license with no disciplinary actions in the past 5 years.
No Dual or Familial Relationships
Supervisors cannot be related to their supervisees (spouse, parent, child, sibling, in-law) or have a dual relationship that could impair objectivity.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
Board-approved clinical supervisors in New Hampshire must comply with the state’s continuing education requirements to maintain both their LMFT license and their supervisor approval status. Continuing education biannual renewal requirements are outlined in Mhp 402 and related statutory provisions.
Continuing Education Requirements (Mhp 402.01)
LMFTs must complete 40 CE hours every 2 years:
At least 30 hours must be from Category A
Up to 10 hours may be from Category B
At least 6 Category A hours must be in Ethics
At least 3 Category A hours must be in Suicide Prevention
Additional Requirement for Board-Approved Supervisors
Under Mhp 402.01(a):
- Board-approved supervisors must complete at least 6 Category A CE hours in clinical supervision during each two-year renewal cycle.
This is a supervisor-specific requirement in addition to general LMFT renewal requirements.
Suicide Prevention Requirement
Under Mhp 402.01(d) and RSA 330-A:10, XI:
At least 3 of the 40 CE hours must be in suicide prevention.
These hours must be from Category A*.
Training must come from a nationally recognized, evidence-based, or best practices organization and address suicide prevention, intervention, or post-vention, including how mental illness, substance use disorders, trauma, or interpersonal violence impact suicide risk.
Home Study / Self-Study Limitations
Under Mhp 402.04.2(a):
Up to 30 of the required 40 CE hours may be completed through qualifying home study or self-study formats.
The remaining CE hours must be obtained through other qualifying formats as defined in the administrative rules.
Licensees are responsible for verifying current CE format definitions and limits at the time of renewal.
*Category A & Category B Examples
Further definitions are found in Mhp 402.04.
Category A examples include:
CE sponsored by approved professional associations (e.g., APA, NASW, NBCC, AAMFT, AMHCA, ACA, ASWB, AMA)
Graduate-level psychology or counseling coursework
Approved syllabus development or course updates
Category B examples include:
Professional seminars not qualifying as Category A
Publication of a professional book (up to 6 hours)
Publication of a journal article (up to 5 hours)

Supervision hours will not count unless the Supervision Agreement is submitted to and approved by the Board before supervision begins.Improper documentation
