How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor for LCSWs in California

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor for LCSWs in California

Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in California play a vital role in shaping the next generation of behavioral health professionals. If you're an experienced clinician looking to advance your career, serving as a Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS)-qualified clinical supervisor allows you to mentor Associate Clinical Social Workers (ASWs), expand your scope of influence, and demonstrate leadership within the profession.

At the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI), we offer supervision CE courses, certificates, and support systems that help you meet the California supervision requirements with confidence and clarity.

✅ California Requirements to Qualify as a Clinical Supervisor

According to the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), here’s what LCSWs must meet to qualify to supervise ASWs:

📜 License & Experience Requirements

To serve as a clinical supervisor for ASWs in California, an LCSW must:

  • Hold an active, unrestricted California LCSW license in good standing.

  • Have held a qualifying license (LCSW, LMFT, LPCC, LEP, psychologist, or psychiatrist) for at least 2 of the past 5 years immediately preceding the start of supervision.

  • And during those 2 years, must have either:

    • Practiced psychotherapy,

    • Provided psychological counseling pursuant to paragraph (5) of subdivision (a) of Section 4989.14 (applicable to LEPs),

    • Or provided direct clinical supervision of psychotherapy performed by:

      • Marriage and family therapist trainees,

      • Associate marriage and family therapists (AMFTs),

      • Associate professional clinical counselors (APCCs), or

Required course content coverage

The training must include all of the following:

  • Competencies necessary for new supervisors

  • Goal setting and evaluation

  • Supervisor–supervisee relationship

  • California law and ethics, including legal and ethical issues related to supervision

Note: TCI does not currently offer a CE course that meets the California law and ethics requirement. You must obtain this portion of the training from another approved provider.

  • Cultural variables (race, gender, social class, religious beliefs)

  • Contextual variables (treatment modalities, work settings, use of technology)

  • Supervision theories and literature

  • Documentation and record-keeping of supervisee’s client files, as well as supervision records

Exemptions: LCSWs holding an approved supervision credential from organizations like CCE, ABECSW, CAMFT, or AAMFT may be exempt from the 15-hour training.
