How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor for LCSWs in Colorado

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor for LCSWs in Colorado

Are you a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Colorado ready to take the next step in your professional journey? Serving as a clinical supervisor not only allows you to mentor emerging social workers—it positions you as a leader in your field, expands your professional impact, and strengthens the behavioral health workforce across the state.

This guide breaks down the exact requirements for serving as a clinical supervisor for LCSW candidates in Colorado, and how Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you with advanced training, continuing education, and community-building opportunities.

✅ Who Is Qualified to Provide Clinical Supervision in Colorado?

According to Colorado Code of Regulations, 4 CCR 726-1, Rule 1.14(C)(3)(d) (Supervisor Qualifications), the Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners accepts the following individuals as qualified clinical supervisors for LCSW candidates:

  • A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) currently licensed by the Colorado State Board of Social Work Examiners (or by the board in the jurisdiction where supervision takes place).

  • A social worker licensed at the highest level in another state or jurisdiction. If licensure wasn’t offered in that jurisdiction, the supervisor must provide documentation showing their competence in the same field of social work as the supervisee.

🧠 Supervisor Qualifications

To effectively supervise a candidate for LCSW licensure in Colorado, you must:

  • Possess adequate clinical experience and competence in the services being provided.

  • Have a strong understanding of the legal, ethical, and professional standards relevant to the clients being served.

  • Maintain accurate records of supervision hours and supervisee clinical hours, and retain those records for at least five years from the date supervision ends.

📌 Colorado does not require additional CE or formal supervisor training to serve as a clinical supervisor—however, pursuing high-quality supervision training enhances your confidence, skillset, and ability to meet ethical responsibilities.

📋 What Supervisors Should Know About Supervisee Requirements

While supervisees are responsible for meeting licensure criteria, supervisors play a critical role in guiding the process. Here's what you need to know to support your supervisee:

  • Supervisees must complete 3,360 hours of post-master’s social work over at least 24 months.

📄 Statutory Basis: Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-245-404(2)(c)

  • At least 1,680 hours must be clinical, involving diagnosis, assessment, treatment, or counseling.

  • Supervisees must receive 96 hours of clinical supervision, with at least 48 hours being individual and face-to-face (in person or via telesupervision).

  • Supervisees must be properly licensed, registered, or listed with the Board before starting to accrue hours.

  • Teaching hours do not qualify toward the required clinical experience.

As the supervisor, you are responsible for ensuring that the structure, quality, and documentation of supervision align with state standards. Keeping detailed records is not just good practice—it’s a regulatory requirement.

📚 Do I Need Supervision CE to Be Approved?

Colorado does not mandate supervision-specific CE to serve as a clinical supervisor. However, LCSWs must still meet the state’s Professional Development Hour (PDH) requirements for license renewal:

  • Complete 40 PDH every two-year renewal cycle.

  • No more than 20 PDH can come from a single activity type.

  • Up to 5 PDH may be carried over from the previous cycle if earned within six months of license expiration.

  • Documentation of PDH must be kept for five years.
