How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Alaska as a Licensed Psychologist
If you are a Licensed Psychologist in Alaska aiming to supervise post-doctoral candidates, it’s important to understand the state’s official clinical supervisor requirements. The Alaska Board of Psychologists and Psychological Associate Examiners outlines specific criteria for supervisor eligibility, continuing education (CE), and proper supervision protocols. This guide details those requirements, highlights pitfalls to avoid, and explains how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you in meeting Alaska LP supervision CE obligations.
📜 Supervisor Eligibility Requirements in Alaska
To serve as a clinical supervisor in Alaska, you must meet all of the following qualifications:
Be a Licensed Psychologist or ABPP Diplomate
According to 12 AAC 60.070, post-doctoral supervised experience must be completed “under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or a diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP).” This rule also appears in the Board's official supervision-plan forms.Hold a License in Good Standing
The Board's supervision plan forms require supervisors to confirm that their license is:- Active
- In good standing
- Free from complaints or sanctions that would limit their ability to supervise
Be Competent in the Area of Supervision
Defined in 12 AAC 60.990(a)(10), "appropriate supervision" requires that:- The supervisee’s activities fall within the supervisor’s scope of expertise
- The supervisor takes full responsibility for the quality of services
- Supervision is conducted in a manner consistent with 12 AAC 60.185 (adherence to the Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct) or in accordance with an alternate supervision plan approved under 12 AAC 60.080(c)
Be Approved by the Board
As outlined in 12 AAC 60.020, the supervision relationship must be approved by the Board before supervision begins. This includes:- Approval of the supervision plan
- Issuance of a temporary license to the supervisee
📚 Supervision Standards for Alaska Psychologist Licensure
Supervised experience must meet the structure outlined in 12 AAC 60.070 and 12 AAC 60.080:
- Minimum 1 hour/week of individual, face-to-face supervision
- Supervision must address direct client care
- At least 80% of supervised experience must occur under a licensed psychologist or ABPP diplomate
📜 Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
There are no continuing education requirements specifically for Clinical Supervisors. Below are the general CE requirements.
Under 12 AAC 60.260, psychologists must complete 20 CE hours per year with the following requirements:
🔹 Prior Licensing Period July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2025
For this licensing period, CE must include annually:
- 6 hours Alaska Native cross-cultural education
- 4 hours teletherapy practice (see 12 AAC 60.405)
- 3 hours professional ethics
- 3 hours suicide prevention
- 2 hours substance abuse education
🔹 Licensing Period Beginning On or After July 1, 2025
First Renewal After Initial Licensure:
Same category requirements as above.
All Subsequent Renewals:
20 CE hours per year
- At least 3 hours in professional ethics
🔴 Live Interactive Requirement (12 AAC 60.260(c)-(d))
At least half of the required CE hours (10 of 20 annually) must be obtained through live interactive programs.
“Live interactive” means:
- Real-time engagement between instructor and participants
- May be in-person or real-time online
- May not be pre-recorded
- May not be self-study
Licensees must maintain verification of attendance.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
❌ Supervisee Not Being Registered
Supervision must be approved before it starts. Supervisors cannot retroactively claim hours.
❌ Supervision Hours Not Documented Properly
Failure to maintain weekly supervision logs or signed documentation can result in hours being rejected.
❌ Supervisor Does Not Meet Eligibility at the Time
Only a currently licensed psychologist or ABPP diplomate in good standing can supervise. Previous qualifications do not count retroactively.
