✅ Ongoing/Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
To remain eligible as a supervisor in California, licensed psychologists must comply with both general Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and supervision-specific coursework obligations.

California psychologists must complete:
36 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every two years
Including:
- 4 hours in Laws and Ethics
- 4 hours in Cultural Diversity and/or Social Justice
These required topic hours are included within the 36-hour total.

Be accrued from at least two (2) of the four CPD categories:
- Professional Activities

Category-specific limits apply. For example:

🔹 Additional Statutory Requirement – Child Abuse Assessment Training
(16 CCR § 1382.4)
All persons applying for licensure or renewal as a psychologist in California must have completed:
At least 7 instructional hours of coursework or training in child abuse assessment and reporting
This training must:
- Cover subject areas described in Business and Professions Code § 28

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even qualified supervisors can unintentionally invalidate supervisees' hours if they overlook key requirements. Here are pitfalls California psychologists should avoid:
🚫 Supervisees Not Being Registered
California requires psychological associates (those accruing supervised hours toward licensure) to be registered with the Board of Psychology before beginning client services. Supervising someone who is not registered can result in all accrued hours being disqualified.
📉 Improper or Incomplete Documentation
All supervision must be tracked using weekly logs and verified through the Supervision Agreement form. Missing logs, unsigned forms, or inadequate documentation can lead the Board to reject supervision hours. Always ensure records are updated, signed, and maintained according to APA and Board standards.
❌ Supervisor Ineligibility During Supervision
If a supervisor fails to maintain required qualifications—such as holding a valid, active license in good standing, completing the required 6 hours of supervision coursework every two years (CCR § 1387.1(b)), or maintaining sufficient availability and professional responsibility during the supervision period—the supervisee’s hours may be disqualified. Supervisors should remain compliant throughout the entire supervision relationship.
