How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in California as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in California, serving as a clinical supervisor allows you to shape the future of the profession while expanding your impact and career opportunities. However, it’s crucial to understand the specific California clinical supervisor requirements to ensure your supervision hours are valid and your license remains in good standing. This guide walks you through who qualifies, what supervision CE is required, pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your training journey.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

To supervise Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFTs) in California, you must meet the qualifications set by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS). According to California Code of Regulations Title 16 § 1833.1, supervisors must:

  • Hold a valid, active, and unrestricted license as an LMFT, LCSW, LPCC, LEP, or licensed physician/psychiatrist (as specified in BPC 4980.03(g)).

  • Not have been subject to any disciplinary action by the licensing board within the past two years.

  • Complete initial supervision training outlined in § 1834 (see below for details and deadlines).

🕒 Initial Supervision Training Requirements

Before (or shortly after) beginning supervision, California requires supervisors to complete 15 hours of supervision training that meets BBS criteria, detailed in 16 CCR § 1834(a). The training must be obtained from a government agency, a BBS-approved CE provider, or a graduate-level course from an accredited postsecondary institution.

  • If taken from a CE provider or government agency, the training must be completed within 2 years before or within 60 days after starting supervision.

  • If taken at the graduate level, the course must be completed within 4 years before or within 60 days after beginning supervision.

The training must cover:

  • Law and ethics - particularly legal and ethical issues in supervision

  • Cultural variables (race, gender, religion, etc.)

  • Contextual variables (treatment modalities, work settings, etc.)

  • Supervisor-supervisee dynamics; goal-setting and evaluation

  • Competencies relevant to new supervisors

  • Goal setting and evaluation

  • Documentation standards

  • Supervision theories, skills, and literature; current best practices and industry standards

🔁 Ongoing Supervision Training Requirements

To maintain eligibility as a supervisor, you must complete six (6) hours of continuing professional development (CPD) in supervision during each license renewal period. As stated in 16 CCR § 1834(c):

16 CCR § 1834(c)
To supervise an associate, a supervisor shall complete a minimum of six (6) hours of continuing professional development in supervision during each license renewal period.

This training must:

  • Be specific to supervision practices

  • Be provided by a government agency or BBS-approved CE provider

Note: Supervision training is not the only way to meet this requirement. According to §1834(c), supervisors may also fulfill the 6-hour CPD requirement by teaching supervision, authoring supervision-related publications, participating in peer discussion groups, or collaborating on supervision-focused projects — as long as the activity directly relates to supervision.

🏅 Alternative Path: National Supervisor Certification

Instead of completing California’s specific training and renewal requirements, supervisors may qualify by holding a valid and active supervisor certification from any of the following entities:

  • American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT)

  • California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT)

  • Center for Credentialing and Education (CCE)

  • American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (ABECSW)

The Board may also accept certifications from other organizations if their standards are equivalent or higher.

⚠️ Pitfall to Avoid

Even if you meet all supervisor qualifications, supervision hours will not count unless:

  • The supervisee is properly registered with the BBS at the time hours are gained.

  • A Supervisory Agreement is signed and retained.

  • You maintain accurate, signed weekly logs of supervision.
