How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Colorado as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Colorado as a Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT)

If you're a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Colorado, stepping into a supervisory role allows you to shape the next generation of clinicians while elevating your professional expertise. But before you begin, it’s critical to understand the Colorado clinical supervisor requirements to ensure your supervision hours count—and your supervisees’ futures stay on track. This guide outlines how to serve as a supervisor in Colorado, including who qualifies, ongoing CE expectations, supervision pitfalls to avoid, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your journey with flexible, high-quality continuing education.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Colorado’s Marriage and Family Therapist supervisors must meet the criteria outlined in 4 CCR 736-1, Rule 14, found in the Code of Colorado Regulations.

Who Qualifies as a Supervisor?
According to Rule 14, section (C)(3)(a) of the Code:

(1) A marriage and family therapist or any other licensed mental health professional who, at the time of the supervision, possessed a license in good standing in the jurisdiction in which the applicant's services were rendered, and who, at the time of the supervision, had education, clinical experience, and clinical supervisory experience in the field of marriage and family therapy.
(2) A marriage and family therapist who, at the time of the supervision, was an approved supervisor under the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).
or
(4) A marriage and family therapist licensed at the highest level in another jurisdiction may qualify, even if that jurisdiction does not offer MFT licensure—as long as their supervisor documents their competence in MFT to the Board’s satisfaction.
4 CCR 736-1, Rule 14

This structure provides flexibility for supervisors from different professional backgrounds—as long as they can demonstrate relevant MFT supervisory expertise at the time of providing supervision.

🔁 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

While Colorado does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to serve as a clinical supervisor, you must maintain an active license to remain eligible to supervise. This means fulfilling the state’s general license renewal requirements for LMFTs under the Continuing Professional Competence (CPC) Program.

📌 General CE Requirements for License Renewal
In accordance with 4 CCR 736-1 Rule 1.18(E), to keep your LMFT license active in Colorado, you must:

✅ Complete 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every 2-year renewal cycle

✅ Participate in the CPC Program, which includes:

  • Completing a Professional Practice Survey
  • Creating a Learning Plan tailored to your goals
  • Documenting Professional Development Activities (PDAs) aligned with your learning plan
⚠️ Important Limits
  • You may count no more than 20 PDH from any single Professional Development Activity (e.g., one certificate program, online course, or conference).
  • To satisfy the full 40 PDH requirement, you will need to complete at least two distinct learning activities if one activity provides the maximum of 20 PDH.
  • You may carry forward up to 5 PDH from the previous renewal cycle if:
    • They were earned within three months before license expiration, and
    • They are in excess of the 40 PDH required for that renewal cycle.
🧠 Common PDH Activities May Include:
  • Online CE courses (self-paced or live)
  • Live webinars and workshops
  • Teaching, presenting, or mentoring
  • Publishing professional content
  • Group learning or consultation
  • Volunteering in a clinical capacity

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Too often, well-intentioned supervisors discover that supervision hours didn’t count—causing costly delays for supervisees. Here are errors to avoid:

  • Unapproved Supervision Structures
Make sure your supervisees are working under the correct supervision pathway defined by the Colorado Board. If your supervisory role or documentation doesn’t meet Board standards, your supervisee’s hours may be rejected.

  • Supervision Hours Not Counting
If the supervisor does not meet the Board's eligibility criteria or fails to provide sufficient documentation of their qualifications, supervision hours may be rejected—even retroactively.

  • Supervisors Not Maintaining Competence
Even experienced clinicians can lose track of changing standards in supervision. Maintaining competence through CE ensures your guidance remains compliant and clinically effective.

📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps You Meet Colorado’s CE Requirements

While Colorado does not require supervision-specific CE to serve as a supervisor, maintaining active licensure is essential to remain eligible. Under Colorado’s Continuing Professional Competence (CPC) Program, all LMFTs must complete 40 Professional Development Hours (PDH) each 2-year renewal cycle. The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers flexible, expert-led training that not only supports your growth as a clinical supervisor—but also helps you fulfill your license renewal requirements.

🛑 Reminder: Colorado allows no more than 20 PDH from a single Professional Development Activity, including self-paced online courses.

🧠 Recommended Courses

  • 20 CE Clinical Supervision Training Bundle
This focused training bundle provides exactly 20 CE hours and covers key topics such as:

    • Ethics and legal considerations
    • Clinical documentation
    • Supervision models
    • Cultural competence
Because it's delivered as a single self-paced online course, it can count for up to 20 PDH toward your renewal requirement.

  • Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (49 CE Hours)
This comprehensive program covers all essential clinical supervision competencies and offers 49 CE hours. However, because it is also a single self-paced activity, only 20 PDH may be counted toward your license renewal in any one cycle.

  • Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses
If you're seeking focused training on specific topics (e.g., supervision ethics, multicultural awareness, trauma-informed supervision), TCI's catalog offers a variety of self-paced, online courses.

⚠️ Note: These courses also fall under the same PDH category (independent/self-study), and therefore cannot be combined with the 20 CE Bundle or CSC program to exceed the 20 PDH per activity type.

  • Live Webinars (Synchronous Learning)
To complete your remaining 20 PDH, Colorado requires participation in at least one additional activity category. TCI’s live, instructor-led webinars meet this need and are considered a separate Professional Development Activity under Colorado's CPC rules.

These webinars are interactive and cover advanced topics in supervision, ethics, and clinical best practices—making them an ideal complement to your self-paced coursework.
