How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Delaware as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
If you’re a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Delaware, serving as a clinical supervisor is a meaningful step forward in your professional journey. Clinical supervision plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of therapists—but before you begin supervising, it’s essential to meet the Delaware clinical supervisor requirements to ensure your supervision hours count and your supervisees stay on track. This guide outlines everything you need to know about how to serve as a supervisor in Delaware, including official state regulations, ongoing CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your continuing education needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
Delaware does not issue a standalone “approved supervisor” credential, but the Board accepts supervisors who meet any of the following criteria outlined in Title 24 of the Delaware Administrative Code, Section 3000, Rule 6.3.1:
You are a Delaware-licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT)
You hold the AAMFT Approved Supervisor designation
You are an AAMFT supervisor candidate who is acceptable to the Board
You are a licensed MFT from another state, in good standing for at least five years, and have passed the AMFTRB national exam
You are a licensed behavioral health professional (e.g., psychologist, clinical social worker, physician, or APRN) providing supervision in an area of specialized clinical competency essential to the applicant’s training. In these cases, the applicant must demonstrate a compelling clinical reason for receiving supervision from a non-LMFT.
While Delaware does not mandate a set number of continuing education hours for supervisors, your training and experience must meet the Board’s acceptability standards.

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
While the state of Delaware does not impose any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) requirements, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must meet the Board’s general CE requirements to maintain an active license—and thereby remain eligible to supervise.
Under Section 3000, Rule 12.2 of the Delaware Administrative Code, LMFTs are required to complete 40 acceptable CE hours every two years, which include:
- ✅ 3 hours in ethics
- ✅ 3 hours in cultural inclusion, equity, or diversity
Importantly, these 40 hours are not limited to traditional coursework. Acceptable CE activities, as defined in Rule 12.2.2, include:
12.2.2.2: Any activity designed to maintain professional competence in the practice of mental health counseling or marriage and family therapy. Examples include interactive courses, workshops, seminars, and webinars.
12.2.2.3: Teaching, presenting, or publishing—such as teaching academic or CE courses, presenting original papers, or authoring a peer-reviewed article—may count for up to 20 of the 40 required hours.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
To ensure your supervision is valid and your supervisees are protected, avoid these missteps:
🔹 Improper Documentation
Maintain clear and detailed records of all supervision sessions—including dates, duration, focus areas, and progress notes. Incomplete or vague documentation can invalidate supervision hours.
🔹 Lack of an Approved Supervision Plan
Supervisees must have a Board-approved supervision plan in place before they begin accruing hours toward licensure. Any hours gained before official plan approval may be rejected.
🔹 Not Meeting Supervisor Qualifications
You must fully meet Delaware supervision training requirements for MFTs before beginning any supervision. Supervising before you're eligible can disqualify your supervisee’s hours.
