How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Delaware as a Psychologist

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Delaware as a Psychologist

Serving as a clinical supervisor is a significant professional responsibility for licensed psychologists in Delaware. Supervisors are instrumental in guiding postdoctoral candidates as they transition from graduate training to independent practice—ensuring ethical, competent, and evidence-based clinical work.

This guide explains the Delaware clinical supervision requirements, including supervisor qualifications, supervision hour structure, documentation standards, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet continuing education (CE) requirements through flexible, accredited online training.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements (Delaware Psychology Board)

To supervise postdoctoral experience that counts toward psychologist licensure in Delaware, you must be a licensed Delaware clinical psychologist.

Delaware does not require a separate supervisor license or formal application process. However, supervision must comply with the Board’s regulations to ensure the supervisee’s hours are accepted toward licensure.

📄 Regulations: 24 Del. Admin. Code §§ 7.3 & 7.6

🔹 Supervision Requirements You Must Help Enforce

Although these requirements are written for supervisees, supervisors are directly responsible for ensuring that postdoctoral training meets these standards under Delaware law.

  • Minimum Total Hours: 1,500 postdoctoral hours, completed within 1 to 3 years

  • Direct Service Requirement: At least 25% of the hours must involve direct psychological services

  • Supervision Ratio: At least 1 hour of face-to-face supervision per 10 hours of clinical work

  • Group Supervision Limit: Up to 5 supervisees per group; 2 hours of group = 1 hour of individual supervision

  • Documentation Requirement: You must provide written evaluations and complete and sign the Supervisory Reference Form

🔒 Important Registration Requirement

Before supervision begins, all postdoctoral trainees must be registered as Psychological Assistants with the Delaware Board.

Any hours accrued before registration will not count toward licensure.

📄 See: 24 Del. Admin. Code § 7.6

📅 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements for Delaware Psychologists

Delaware does not require any supervisor-specific continuing education (CE) hours to qualify or remain eligible as a clinical supervisor.

However, psychologists must complete general CE requirements to maintain licensure, and those who supervise are ethically responsible for staying competent in supervision practices.

Under 24 Del. Admin. Code §10.0, all licensed psychologists in Delaware must complete 40 hours of continuing education (CE) during each biennial licensing period, which runs from August 1 of each odd-numbered year through July 31 of the next odd-numbered year.

“Psychologists must obtain 40 hours of continuing education during each biennial licensing period in order to be eligible for renewal of license. A minimum of 10 hours of continuing education credit must be obtained via face to face or live webinar. All psychologists must complete 3 hours of continuing education in ethics and 3 hours in cultural inclusion, equity, and diversity.”

24 Del. Admin. Code § 10.1.2

Key details:

  • Total required hours: 40 CE hours every two years.

  • Format requirement: At least 10 hours must be live (face-to-face or live webinar).

  • Mandatory topics: 3 hours in Ethics and 3 hours in Cultural Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity.

  • Acceptable CE sources: APA-approved or other Board-recognized programs directly relevant to the professional practice of psychology (§10.6).

Note: While supervision-focused CE is optional, it helps fulfill Delaware’s requirement that CE “contribute directly to professional competency” (§10.5). Choosing CE on supervision ethics, evaluation methods, or supervisory frameworks supports your effectiveness and reduces risk.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid as a Supervisor in Delaware

Even experienced clinicians can unintentionally compromise a supervisee’s licensure path by overlooking state requirements. To ensure supervision hours are accepted by the Delaware Board of Examiners of Psychologists, supervisors should avoid the following pitfalls:

🔹 Supervisee not registered before supervision begins
Before supervision starts, the supervisee must be formally registered as a Psychological Assistant with the Board.
🔒 Hours accrued before registration are not eligible toward licensure.
📄 Reference: 24 Del. Admin. Code § 7.6

🔹 Supervisor lacks proper license
Only a licensed clinical psychologist or a licensed physician specializing in psychiatry may supervise postdoctoral hours.
Supervision provided by another professional, even if licensed in a related field, will not be accepted by the Board.
📄 See: Supervisory Reference Form + §7.3

🔹 Incomplete or incorrect documentation
Supervisors must sign the Supervisory Reference Form and ensure all required information is accurate.

✏️ Common issues:

  • Missing signatures or supervisor credentials
  • Incorrect supervision dates
  • Incomplete or vague descriptions of supervised experience
