How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Georgia as a Psychologist

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Georgia as a Psychologist

Serving as a clinical supervisor in Georgia represents a key professional milestone for licensed psychologistss. Supervisors play an essential role in shaping psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows into competent, ethical professionals prepared for independent practice.

This guide explains the Georgia clinical supervisor requirements, the continuing education (CE) standards for renewal, and pitfalls to avoid—plus how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) helps psychologists strengthen supervision competence through accredited online CE programs.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements — Georgia Psychologists

To qualify as an internship or postdoctoral supervisor in Georgia, psychologists must meet the criteria outlined in Rule 510-2-.05(2)(f) and Rule 510-2-.05(3) of the Georgia State Board of Examiners of Psychologists.

A qualified internship or postdoctoral supervisor must:

  • Hold a current psychology license issued by the Georgia Board of Examiners of Psychologists, or a license issued by another jurisdiction whose standards are not lower than Georgia’s.

  • Have no active disciplinary order or restriction on their professional license in any state or jurisdiction.

🧩 Supervision Requirements You Must Help Enforce

Although these provisions appear in the Internship and Postdoctoral Supervised Work Experience (SWE) rule, Georgia supervisors are directly responsible for ensuring that the structure and delivery of supervision comply with these standards under Rule 510-2-.05.

Professional Boundaries:
Supervisors may not be employed by or under the direction of an entity headed by the supervisee, nor may supervision occur in a setting where the supervisee holds a financial or ownership interest. These safeguards prevent conflicts of interest and protect the integrity of the supervisory relationship.
(Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 510-2-.05(3)(a))

Limit the Number of Supervisees
A supervisor may not take primary supervisory responsibility for more than three (3) interns or postdoctoral fellows concurrently without prior Board approval. This rule ensures that each supervisee receives the level of oversight and mentoring necessary for competent practice.
(Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 510-2-.05(3)(b))

Industrial/Organizational (I/O) Psychology Exception
Supervisors in Industrial/Organizational psychology are exempt from the three-supervisee limit, but must provide a minimum of two hours of supervision for every 40 hours of work performed by each intern or fellow.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Although the Georgia Board of Examiners of Psychologists does not require any supervision-specific continuing education (CE) to qualify or remain eligible as a clinical supervisor, all licensed psychologists must fulfill the Board’s general CE requirements for license renewal.

Georgia psychologists must meet the continuing education (CE) requirements outlined in Chapter 510-8, Rule 510-8-.01 – Continuing Education Requirements.

CE Requirements Overview

“A total of 40 credits of continuing education relevant to the licensee's professional activities are required biennially to renew a license. Six (6) CE credits must be earned in professional ethics at a workshop attended either in person or a synchronous webinar.”
Rule 510-8-.01(1), GAC

Additional details include:

  • ✅ The biennial renewal period runs from January 1 of an odd-numbered year to December 31 of the following even-numbered year.

  • ✅ Each CE hour equals one clock hour of instruction.

  • ✅ New licensees must complete:

    • 20 CE credits (3 ethics) if licensed in the first year of the biennium.
    • 0 CE credits if licensed in the second year of the biennium (first renewal only).
  • ✅ Ethics CE: 6 hours must be earned in professional ethics, through either an in-person workshop or a synchronous live webinar.

  • ✅ Disability accommodations are available by written petition at least two months before the renewal deadline.

📚 Acceptable Types of Continuing Education

In addition to Rule 510-8-.01, Georgia’s continuing education categories and limitations are outlined in Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. r. 510-8-.02 – Types of Continuing Education.

Continuing education credits may be earned through the following areas:

  • Area I – Academic (maximum 20 CE credits per biennium)

  • Area II – Ongoing Group Consultation (minimum 10 CE credits; maximum 20 CE credits per biennium)

  • Area III – Approved Sponsored Continuing Education (maximum 40 CE credits per biennium)

Under Area III, psychologists may earn up to 40 CE credits per biennium through approved sponsor organizations. CE activities in this category may be completed in person, synchronously (live webinar), or asynchronously (on-demand).

However, pursuant to Rule 510-8-.01(1) and Rule 510-8-.02(6), the required 6 CE credits in professional ethics must be completed in person or via synchronous webinar.

Licensees must retain official certificates of attendance documenting the date, title, location, and number of CE hours earned.

Successful completion of the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) examination satisfies all CE requirements for the biennium in which the examination is passed, provided documentation is submitted to the Board.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid as a Supervisor in Georgia

Even experienced psychologists may encounter challenges that invalidate supervision hours or delay licensure approval.

Pitfalls include:

  • Supervising too many interns or fellows without obtaining prior Board approval.

  • Failing to document supervision hours according to Georgia Board standards.

  • Engaging in dual-role conflicts — such as supervising within an organization managed or owned by the supervisee.

  • Failing to meet ethics CE requirements or completing non-approved continuing education activities.

Maintaining strict compliance with supervision structure, documentation, and CE requirements ensures that your supervisees’ hours are fully recognized and that your license remains in good standing.
