How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Illinois as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you're a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Illinois, stepping into the role of clinical supervisor allows you to guide the next generation of therapists while deepening your own professional expertise. But before you begin supervising, it’s essential to understand the Illinois clinical supervisor requirements—missing even one detail can result in your supervisee’s hours being rejected.
This guide walks you through how to serve as a supervisor in Illinois, including eligibility criteria, CE requirements, supervision pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet your Illinois supervision training requirements for MFTs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To provide clinical supervision to MFTs in Illinois, you must meet at least one of several paths set by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), as outlined in Illinois’ Administrative Code, Title 68, Section 1283.25(b). These include:
Being a certified supervisor (or supervisor-in-training) through the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT),
ORHolding an active Illinois MFT license with at least five years of post-degree clinical experience providing marriage and family therapy,
ORHaving five years of AAMFT clinical membership,
ORBeing licensed in Illinois as a clinical psychologist, LCSW, LCPC, or licensed psychiatrist and having:
Five years of MFT experience
At least 1,000 hours of conjoint (relational or family-based) therapy
Either two years of experience providing MFT supervision or completion of a graduate-level supervision course (minimum 15 contact hours)

🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
While there are no continuing education (CE) requirements specifically for clinical supervisors in Illinois, you must still meet the general CE requirements to keep your MFT license active—and thereby remain eligible to supervise.
According to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) in Rules 68 IAC Section 1283.110 and Section 1130(Subpart E), all licensed Marriage and Family Therapists must complete:
✅ 30 hours of CE every two-year renewal cycle, including:
1 hour of Sexual Harassment Prevention Training (required every cycle)
1 hour of Implicit Bias Awareness Training (required every cycle)
1 hour of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias Training (required once every 6 years/3 cycles)
1 hour of Cultural Competency Training (required once every 6 years/3 cycles)
While supervision-specific CE is not mandated, staying up to date on supervision best practices is strongly recommended—especially given the evolving ethical, legal, and clinical considerations involved in overseeing interns.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
To protect your supervisees’ path to licensure, avoid these frequent mistakes:
Improper Documentation
Use written supervision agreements, keep accurate supervision logs, and follow all IDFPR documentation requirements.
Supervisor Not Qualified at Time of Supervision
You must already meet Illinois’s supervisor eligibility criteria when supervision starts. Supervision provided before meeting those standards may not count.
