How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Illinois as an LCSW

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Illinois as an LCSW

If you're a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Illinois, supervising emerging professionals is a meaningful way to shape the future of behavioral healthcare. This guide explains how LCSWs can serve as clinical supervisors in Illinois. It outlines eligibility criteria, supervision requirements, and continuing education (CE) expectations—plus how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support your journey.

✅ Who Is Eligible to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Illinois?

To supervise clinical hours for an LCSW applicant in Illinois, you must hold a qualifying license and meet experience standards set by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

Who Can Supervise?
According to IDFPR’s official VE-SW form, the following professionals are eligible to supervise:

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
  • Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
  • Licensed Clinical Psychologist
  • Licensed Psychiatrist
  • Licensed Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse

📝 Supervisors must have held their qualifying license for the duration of the supervision period.

⏱️ Required Supervised Experience for LCSW Applicants

As a supervisor, you must oversee one of the following:

  • 3,000 hours of post-degree, supervised clinical experience, OR
  • 2,000 hours if the applicant holds a doctoral degree in social work

The supervision must span a minimum of two years, with at least 4 hours per month of direct supervision

🎓 Initial Training or CE Requirements

  • ❌ Illinois does not require formal supervision training or supervision-specific CE to begin supervising LCSW candidates.
  • ✅ However, LCSWs and LSWs must meet general continuing education (CE) requirements to maintain licensure. These requirements include mandated content areas that are often relevant to supervisors.

🔄 Ongoing or Renewal CE Requirements

There are no supervision-specific CE requirements for maintaining supervisor eligibility in Illinois. However, LCSWs must still fulfill general CE requirements for license renewal.

For each 24-month license renewal cycle, Illinois LSWs and LCSWs must complete 30 hours of continuing education, with no CE required during the first renewal cycle after initial licensure.

Required CE Content Areas (2023–2025 cycle)

  • 3 hours in Social Work Practice Ethics
  • 3 hours in Cultural Competence
  • 1 hour in Sexual Harassment Prevention Training
  • 1 hour in Implicit Bias Awareness Training
  • 1 hour in Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias (required once every three renewal cycles)
  • 6 hours in Clinical Supervision Training (required only for LCSWs during their second renewal cycle)

📌 Note: TCI currently does not offer training on Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. Clinicians should complete this training through another approved provider.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

Even with flexibility in Illinois, supervision errors can jeopardize a supervisee’s path to licensure. Avoid these common issues:

  • ❌ Improper Documentation
Supervisors must complete and sign the VE-SW form accurately. Incomplete or inconsistent records may lead to denial of supervisee hours.
  • ❌ Ineligible Supervisor
Only the professionals listed above qualify. Licenses outside that list are not eligible.
  • ❌ Insufficient Supervision Hours
Supervisors must provide at least 4 hours of supervision per month across the full supervision period.
  • ❌ Not Spanning Two Years
Even if total hours are completed quickly, supervision must be distributed over at least two years.
