How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Indiana as a Psychologist

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Indiana as a Psychologist

Wondering how to serve as a supervisor in Indiana as a licensed psychologist? This guide explains the Indiana clinical supervisor requirements specifically for psychologists, what counts for renewal CE, the pitfalls that commonly derail supervision hours, and how TCI’s supervision CE helps you stay compliant and confident.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements (Indiana Psychologists)

Indiana does not issue a separate “Approved Supervisor” credential, license, or mandatory supervision training course for psychologists.

Instead, a psychologist becomes eligible to supervise others pursuing independent clinical licensure (via the Health Service Provider in Psychology, or HSPP, endorsement) by meeting two requirements:

  • Hold an active Indiana psychologist license, and

  • Hold the HSPP endorsement.

These two qualifications are sufficient for supervising post-degree experience for HSPP applicants—such as doctoral-level practicum or post-internship hours—as confirmed by official Indiana licensing documents. No other supervisor-specific credential, training program, or years-after-licensure threshold is outlined in state law or administrative rules for psychologists.

Understanding the HSPP Experience Requirement

Because supervision authority is tied to HSPP endorsement, it is helpful to understand what that endorsement requires.

Under IC 25-33-1-5.1(c)(3), a psychologist must complete:

“At least two (2) years of experience in a health service setting that includes:
(A) one (1) year obtained in an organized health service training program and at least one (1) year obtained after the individual received the individual’s doctoral degree in psychology; or
(B) sequential and organized supervised professional experience in a health service setting in which one (1) year of experience was obtained in an organized health service training program.”

Accordingly, psychologists who hold HSPP endorsement have already satisfied Indiana’s statutory health service experience requirements.

Official rule language (excerpt):

“Licensed psychologists must obtain endorsement as health service providers in psychology to engage in the independent diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioral disorders… If a psychologist is not endorsed… the only way the psychologist can engage in the diagnosis and treatment… is to practice under the supervision of a health service provider in psychology … or the psychologist holds a limited license issued under IC 25-33-1-18 and practices within the scope of the psychologist’s limited license.”

🔄 Ongoing/Renewal CE Requirements

Supervisor-specific CE: None.

Indiana does not require supervisor-specific continuing education. Psychologists who hold Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP) endorsement must complete the general renewal CE requirements applicable to HSPP licensees.

From the state page (quoted):

40 total Continuing Education (CE) hours every 2 years.
Of those 40 hours:
6 hours must be in ethics.
At least **3 of those 6 ethics hours must be ‘Category I’ activities.”

Category I vs. Category II (briefly):

  • Category I includes formally organized education such as courses, workshops, seminars, symposia, postdoctoral institutes, and approved home study (computer/audio/video) programs with a certificate of completion. Home study is limited to 10 Category I hours per license period.

  • Category II includes professional learning activities such as journal clubs, colloquia, invited speaker sessions, in-house seminars, case conferences designed for training/teaching, relevant programs at professional/scientific meetings, and approved individualized learning (including approved audio/video programs and formal professional supervision—not administrative supervision).

The renewal page also notes the Category I/II split, including that the board recognizes up to twenty (20) Category II hours within a renewal period. If you have already earned the 10-hour Category I home study maximum, additional qualifying home study hours may be counted as Category II credit.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid as a Supervisor in Indiana

While the rules for supervision in Indiana are clear, there are some pitfalls to watch out for to ensure your hours are properly counted:

  • 1. Supervisor Not Meeting State Requirements at the Time of Supervision
Only an Indiana-licensed HSPP psychologist qualifies as a supervisor for HSPP applicants. If you, as the supervisor, lack HSPP status (or have an expired license), the hours you supervise may not count toward the supervisee’s required experience. Always verify that your own HSPP endorsement and licensure are active before beginning any supervisory duties.

  • 2. Improper Documentation
Ensure that you are accurately documenting every supervised hour. Use the required Forms A/B/C and maintain thorough logs of all supervisory activities. Missing signatures, incorrect forms, or gaps in documentation are common reasons why hours are not approved. Proper and timely documentation is essential to ensure that the hours you supervise are valid.
