How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Iowa as an LISW

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

Under Iowa Administrative Code 645 IAC 280.6(2), to qualify as a clinical supervisor you must:

  • a. Hold an active Independent Social Worker (LISW) license, mental health counselor, or marital/family therapist license.

  • b. Have at least three years of independent practice post-licensure.

  • c. Complete a six-hour CE course in supervision, or one graduate-level supervision course.

  • d. Be knowledgeable of relevant ethical codes and licensing rules

  • e. Ensure that any supervision is conducted under a written supervision plan filed with the Board before hours begin.

🎓 Initial Training / CE Requirements

To start supervising in Iowa you must complete:

  • At least six hours of CE in supervision theory/practice before any supervision begins.

Whether sourced from university or CE provider, the content must cover supervision skills, relevant laws, and ethics.


🔁 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

To maintain supervisor status, Iowa requires:

  • LISWs who supervise must include 3 hours of supervision-specific CE as part of the required 27 CE hours every two years..
