How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Maine as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Maine, serving as a clinical supervisor is a rewarding way to shape the next generation of therapists while advancing your own professional expertise. The Maine Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure has clear requirements for who may supervise MFTs working toward full licensure.
This guide outlines the eligibility requirements to serve as a clinical supervisor in Maine, highlights pitfalls, and explains how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet supervision training needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
According to 02-514 CMR, Chapter 4, Section 19(23), you must:
Hold a qualifying license in Maine:
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
Licensed Pastoral Counselor
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
Certified Social Worker–Independent Practice (CSW-IP)
Licensed Psychologist
Licensed Psychiatrist
You must also be in good standing—not under suspension or probation.
Meet one of the following additional criteria:
Experience pathway: At least five years of licensed practice, including not more than two years of practice as an entry-level conditional licensee.
Certification pathway: Certification by a national professional organization in training or supervision.
Training pathway: Thirty (30) contact hours of training in supervision and at least one year of licensed practice at a level higher than entry-level conditional.
🔁 Ongoing / Renewal Continuing Education Requirements
While Maine does not require continuing education (CE) specifically for MFT supervisors, supervisors are expected to maintain competence in supervision practices. To keep your LMFT license active — and remain eligible to supervise — you must meet the following general CE requirements, pursuant to Board Rules Chapter 7-A:
55 total contact hours of continuing education every 2 years
At least 4 hours must relate to topics addressed in the Code of Ethics
Limit on informal home study/prerecorded programs: You may apply no more than 5 contact hours from informal home study or prerecorded programs, combined, toward the 55-hour requirement
One-time requirement of 12 hours in family or intimate partner violence education (required at your first renewal only; pursuant to §13860(2))

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Supervisee not registered: If the supervision plan isn’t submitted and approved before hours are earned, those hours will not count.
Incomplete documentation: Missing supervision logs, certificates, or plan forms can result in hours being rejected.
Ineligible supervisor at the time: If you didn’t meet the experience, training, or certification requirement when supervision occurred, the hours could be invalid.
📘 How TCI Helps You Meet Supervision & License Renewal CE Requirements
Maine does not require continuing education (CE) specifically for MFT supervisors. However, many professionals qualify as Board-approved supervisors through the Training Pathway, which requires 30 contact hours of training in supervision and at least one year of licensed practice above the entry-level conditional level.
For license renewal, Maine licensees must complete 55 contact hours of continuing education every two years, including at least 4 hours in ethics.
Important Maine limitation: Under Board Rules Chapter 7-A, licensees may apply no more than 5 contact hours from informal home study or prerecorded programs (combined) toward the 55-hour renewal requirement.
TCI offers continuing education for professional development in supervision topics. Licensees are responsible for selecting formats and courses that satisfy Maine’s CE rules and documentation requirements.

Clinical Supervision Certificate Program (49 CE Hours)
A comprehensive program covering supervision models, ethics, documentation, multicultural considerations, and practical supervision skills. Participants receive a certificate of completion.
Note: Maine renewal requires 55 contact hours per biennium, and the amount of CSC hours that may be applied depends on course format and Maine’s limits on informal home study/prerecorded programs.
Individual Clinical Supervision CE Courses
If you’re looking for training in a specific area, browse individual supervision CE courses and select the options that match your professional development goals.
Note: If a course is considered informal home study or a prerecorded program, Maine limits those hours to 5 total per biennium (combined).
Couples, Marriage, and Family Therapy Courses
Courses in this category are specifically designed to fulfill Maine’s one-time 12-hour requirement in family or intimate partner violence education, required at your first license renewal.
