How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Maryland (Psychologists Guide)
If you’re a licensed psychologist (LP) in Maryland looking to serve as a clinical supervisor, it’s important to understand the state’s requirements and regulations. This guide explains Maryland clinical supervisor requirements for psychologists – including supervisor eligibility criteria, necessary continuing education (CE), and pitfalls to avoid – and outlines how to meet these requirements confidently. We’ll also discuss how to serve as a clinical supervisor in Maryland and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can support you with training and resources.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
The supervisor eligibility requirements in Maryland are outlined within the official Post-Doctoral Supervised Experience Reference Form (PDF), issued by the Maryland Board of Examiners of Psychologists. This form is used to verify that a supervisee has met the Maryland clinical supervisor requirements for post-doctoral experience, as defined in the Annotated code of Maryland 10.36.01.04. It includes an attestation section where the supervising psychologist must confirm not only that the applicant’s clinical experience meets state standards, but also that they themselves are legally and professionally qualified to serve as a supervisor. Several of these attestations directly define supervisor eligibility.
To be recognized as a qualified supervisor for post-doctoral clinical experience in Maryland, you must meet all of the following:
🔹 1. Licensed Psychologist or Legal Exemption
You must hold a valid Maryland psychologist license, as outlined in COMAR 10.36.01.04, or fall under a legal exemption (e.g., federal employment or other jurisdictional exceptions).🔹 2. Professional Competence in the Supervised Areas
You must be qualified by virtue of education, training, and experience to supervise in the areas which the applicant for licensure has listed and that you are supervising.🔹 3. Legal Responsibility and Oversight
You must have had direct, active oversight of the applicant’s work and accepted legal and ethical responsibility for it.🔹 4. Supervisory Agreement
A formal agreement must be in place to define the terms and structure of supervision.🔹 5. Evaluation and Documentation
You are responsible for maintaining accurate records and providing a final written evaluation summarizing the supervisee’s experience.
🔁 Ongoing/Renewal Requirements
There are currently no separate or additional renewal requirements specifically for LP supervisors in Maryland. However, all licensed psychologists must comply with general CE requirements for license renewal.
Maryland licensed psychologists must complete 40 CE hours every two years for license renewal. If you supervise psychology associates (unlicensed individuals), at least 3 CE hours must focus on clinical supervision. According to COMAR 10.36.02.04.
In addition, CE requirements include:
Minimum of 3 CE hours in ethics, laws, or risk management
Minimum of 3 CE hours in cultural competence
Maximum of 20 hours through independent study
Maryland defines:
“Course” as an activity with one or more expert instructors that involves systematic presentation and allows interaction (including live in-person or real-time electronic offerings such as webinars).
“Independent study” as study of print or electronic materials offered by approved CE sponsors that does not involve real-time interaction.
(See COMAR 10.36.02.02(B)(7)–(8) for definitions.)
These rules are critical for complying with Maryland LP supervision CE requirements.
⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Even qualified supervisors can make mistakes that jeopardize supervisee hours. Avoid these issues:
Unregistered Supervisees: Supervision hours won’t count if a psychology associate isn’t registered with the Board when required.
Missing Supervision Agreement: Maryland requires a written supervisory agreement. Without one, hours can be disqualified.
Inadequate Supervision Frequency: You must meet with supervisees for at least 1 hour per 20 hours of work. Failure to meet this ratio may result in invalidated hours.
Improper Titles: Supervisees must use training titles like "psychology resident" or "psychology supervisee."
Supervisor Noncompliance: If the supervisor doesn’t meet CE or licensure requirements during supervision, the experience may be disqualified.
📘 How the Telehealth Certification Institute Helps
Although there are no CE requirements specifically for LP supervisors in Maryland, the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education courses that improve supervisory competencies and fulfill general CE requirements for psychology license renewal.
