How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Massachusetts as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Massachusetts, serving as a clinical supervisor is a meaningful step in your career. It allows you to mentor developing professionals, expand your expertise, and strengthen the overall quality of mental health care in the state. However, Massachusetts clinical supervisor requirements are specific—if you miss even one detail, your supervisee’s hours may not count toward licensure.
This guide explains how to serve as a supervisor in Massachusetts, including Massachusetts supervision training requirements for MFTs, CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet supervision CE needs.
✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements
To qualify to supervise MFTs in Massachusetts, you must meet one of the following pathways defined in 262 CMR 3.02:
AAMFT-Designated Supervisor
You are designated as an “Approved Supervisor” by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) to supervise the clinical practice of MFTs.
Licensed Mental Health Professional With Relevant Education and Experience
You hold a Massachusetts license in one of the following professions:
Marriage and Family Therapist
Rehabilitation Counselor
Educational Psychologist
Mental Health Counselor
Psychologist
Psychiatrist
And you hold either:
A master’s degree in social work, marriage and family therapy, rehabilitation counseling, educational psychology, counseling, or an equivalent field; or
A doctoral degree in psychology; or
A medical degree with a sub-specialization in psychiatry.
And you must also have one of the following:
Primary supervisory responsibility for two practitioners providing marriage and family therapy for at least two years (or equivalent), or
A teaching or supervisory position in an educational institution, institute, or agency that trains MFTs, provides regular clinical services to individuals, couples, and families, or offers graduate degrees in MFT or a related field.

🔄 Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements
While Massachusetts does not require continuing education (CE) specifically for clinical supervisors, all Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs) must complete CE every two years to renew their license and remain eligible to supervise, as outlined in 262 CMR 7.00.
To maintain your license in good standing, the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions requires:
At least 30 contact hours of CE per two-year renewal cycle
CE must be completed through Board-recognized providers
Maintain documentation for at least two renewal periods — you may be randomly selected for a CE audit
✅ One-Time Domestic & Sexual Violence Training
Massachusetts law requires all licensees to complete a one-time training in domestic and sexual violence:
Must be completed through a Board- or DPH-approved training program
Counts toward your 30 CE hours for the renewal cycle in which it is completed
Typically offered as a 2-hour CE course by most approved providers

📌 CE Guidance for Supervisors (Recommended, Not Required)
While not mandated, the Board encourages supervisors to include CE focused on the unique responsibilities of clinical oversight. As part of your 30 required CE hours, the Board recommends:
3 hours of Ethics
3 hours of Anti-Discrimination
3 hours of Supervision training (for those supervising students, interns, or clinicians)

These recommendations strengthen supervisory competence and help ensure high-quality clinical education and care across the field.

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid
Improper Documentation
Maintain signed supervision agreements, detailed logs of each session (date, duration, topics), and periodic evaluations to ensure compliance.Supervisor Not Meeting Requirements at the Start
You must fully meet all Board requirements before the first supervision session. Becoming eligible partway through does not retroactively validate earlier hours.
📘 What the Telehealth Certification Institute Offers (Non-CE Use for MA LMFTs)
While the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers a wide range of high-quality courses in supervision and family therapy, these courses are not approved for continuing education (CE) credit for LMFTs in Massachusetts unless they carry specific approval from:
The New England Association for Family and Systemic Therapy (NEAFAST) or its appointed CE administrators
🔗 View official Board policy
As of now, TCI is not listed as an approved provider for LMFT CE by NEAFAST or the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Allied Mental Health and Human Services Professions.
⚠️ What This Means for Massachusetts LMFTs
If you are a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in Massachusetts:
You must verify that any CE course — especially for license renewal — is approved by NEAFAST
TCI courses do not currently meet that requirement, even if they are NBCC- or APA-approved
These courses may be educationally beneficial but will not count toward your 30 CE hours for license renewal in Massachusetts
🎓 TCI Courses Still Offer Value (Non-CE Use in MA)
Although not valid for official CE credit in Massachusetts, TCI’s courses can still be valuable for:
Supervisory skill development
Personal enrichment or supplemental training
Meeting CE requirements in other states or professional roles
🧩 TCI Supervision Courses (Not MA CE-Approved)

Some courses address domestic/sexual violence, but CE credit is not applicable for MA LMFTsIndividual Supervision Courses
