How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Michigan as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

How to Serve as a Clinical Supervisor in Michigan as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)

If you’re a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) in Michigan, becoming an approved clinical supervisor allows you to mentor developing professionals, expand your expertise, and contribute to the quality of mental health care in the state. However, Michigan clinical supervisor requirements are specific—if you miss even one detail, your supervisee’s hours may not count toward licensure.

This guide explains the Michigan clinical supervisor requirements, any ongoing CE expectations, pitfalls, and how the Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) can help you meet supervision CE needs.

✅ Supervisor Eligibility Requirements

In Michigan, an individual can serve as a verifying supervisor for MFT licensure purposes if they hold a master’s degree or higher from a board-approved accredited institution and meet one of several professional qualifications. Eligible supervisors include:

  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists

  • Certified or registered social workers under Article 16 of the Occupational Code (MCL 339.1601–339.1610)

  • Licensed Professional Counselors

  • Physicians practicing in a mental health setting

  • Fully licensed psychologists

  • Individuals who are AAMFT-approved supervisors or in an AAMFT supervisor-in-training program approved by the board

📅 Michigan Ongoing / Renewal CE Requirements

Michigan does not require supervision-specific continuing education (CE) hours to maintain eligibility to supervise as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT). However, all licensed MFTs must renew their license every three years and meet the state’s general renewal requirements to keep their license in good standing and remain eligible to supervise.

To renew your license, you must:

  • Complete a one-time human trafficking training prior to your first renewal
The training must include all of the following components, as outlined in Michigan Administrative Rule R 338.7202:

    • An overview of the types and venues of human trafficking in the U.S.

    • How to identify potential victims in healthcare and behavioral health settings

    • Recognition of warning signs in both adults and minors

    • Resources and protocols for reporting suspected human trafficking cases

  • Complete implicit bias training — 1 hour per year of licensure during each renewal cycle

  • Submit a renewal application and $181.80 renewal fee via MiPLUS

  • Answer good moral character and disciplinary history questions on the renewal application

⚠️ Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Supervisees not being registered — Supervisees must hold the correct limited license before supervision begins. Hours accrued before proper registration may be rejected.

  • Improper documentation — Michigan requires official supervision verification forms. Incomplete or incorrectly filled-out forms can lead to hours being denied.

  • Supervisor not meeting requirements at the time supervision starts — You must meet the eligibility requirements before supervision begins—not partway through the supervision period.

🎓 How Telehealth Certification Institute Supports Michigan Supervisors

While Michigan does not require continuing education (CE) specifically for clinical supervisors, licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) must meet certain general renewal training requirements to keep their license in good standing and remain eligible to supervise. The Telehealth Certification Institute (TCI) offers continuing education courses that both strengthen supervisory skills and fulfill required renewal topics under Michigan law.
